Ripken All Star Game Momento; One of a Kind

In honor of the upcoming All Star Game, I thought I'd share a favorite item of mine.....You may have seen past game highlights leading up to the game Tuesday night and one of them often shown is the HR that Cal Ripken Jr. hit off Chan Ho Park in his last All Star Game appearance in 2001 (Seattle). When that clip is shown, they always play the call from ESPN's Charley Steiner..."Did he do it?, Did he do it?, HE DID!...." Anyways I had the idea afterwards to get an Official ball from the game and have it signed by both Steiner & Ripken.....In 2003, I did catch up with Steiner in Baltimore while he was working as a broadcaster for the Yankees and he was happy to sign it with my inscription request of his famous call....Obviously, I had Ripken sign it later......No doubt one of a kind:

THAT'S AWESOME!! I remember where I was when he hit that! I just got done playing softball (beer-league) and we went to our sponsor bar to watch the rest of the all-star game. Sitting there with my buddies I watch Ripken jack that ball, and in mid-flight I yelled "THERE'S YOUR MVP BABY!!". That is too cool man. Thanks for sharing!! image
  • That is truly one of a kind and great thinking on your part. Living in Seattle and being at that game was really a thrill and the fans here just loved Cal. The fans just went nuts when he hit that HR, and it is a moment I will never forget. There is a plaque out in the bullpen were the ball landed in honor of Cal's Homerun. They presented it to him on his last game in Seattle that September. That's a great memory you have of that day. Very cool. Below is a picture I took of Cal's last game at Safeco with him batting against Jamie Moyer. Notice the name behind second base. Maybe I'll get this signed someday. Thanks for showing the ball, which brought back many great memories. Take care. Doug

Great photo! The only cool item I have from that day is a 2001 All-Star Ripken Jersey that I still wear to every gave I attend, even if it's not an O's game. image

Awesome idea! I love when a signed piece has a lot of thought behind it. So much better than a plain 2x signed ball.

Thanks for the responses and Pigs I really like that panoramic photograph.....I had seen the clip (I still get chills when I see it) yesterday on MLB Network and it reminded me to dig the ball out to share.....The ironic thing is nowadays, it is very difficult to even get one of those '01 All Star Game balls. I had heard there was some sort of shortage of green thread and when they do come up on eBay (which isn't often), they go for a minimum of $70..........

My daughter was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at the age of 2 (2003). My son was diagnosed with Type 1 when he was 17 on December 31, 2009. We were stunned that another child of ours had been diagnosed. Please, if you don't have a favorite charity, consider giving to the JDRF (Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation)

Wonder where the actual ball is?

The ball that Cal hit rests in his collection...The HR ball was actually caught by (I believe) Russ Ortiz in the NL bullpen and returned to Cal.
