........first and foremost, the red book.
Can be found used on EBay or Amazon for as low as $3.00
Basic to cover all generally- the Red Book.
I also recommend The Coin Collectors Survival Manual by Scott Travers, and The Expert's Guide To Collecting And Investing In Rare Coins, by Q. David Bowers (or "QDB", as he is referred to here).
Despite the word "Rare" in Bowers' title, the book is an excellent overview on numismatics and exonumia, and not necessarily of the most esoteric or expensive material, either.
Links go to Amazon.com simply because that cropped up first in keyword searches. Shop around if you like, but add these titles and you won't regret buying them.
Edit to note that these suggestions are for collectors of US Coins. For good general coverage worldwide (including sections on the USA), there are the Krause Standard Catalogs of World Coins, available in four volumes covering the last four centuries of worldwide coinage.

I second both of those books. They have done me a lot of good I think.
