1873 S Double Eagle... a little help for my friend please..

A friend wants to sell and I said I'd try to help with images and description.
I searched the boards data base and learned there are 2 types and open and closed 3's but the images have been removed
and I'm clueless as to which is his.

Agree. The open 3 is the scarcer variety for the 1873-S while the closed 3 is the scacer variety for the 1873 Philadelphia issue. The mint changed the closed 3 to the open 3 since there were complaints that the closed 3 looked too much like an 8. The change occurred early in the year so the majority of the coins struck at Philadelphia were of the open 3 variety. Since transportation to the west coast was slow, the San Francisco mint didn't get the newer open 3 dies until later in the year resulting in the open 3 being the rarer variety.

    Good info.... thanks alot..
  • While it is an open 3 and the open variety cares a nice premium over the more common closed 3 variety, the condition of the coin shown takes away that premium. The coin should trade as a low end circulated Type #2 $20 and would be worth $1025 to $1050 tops........IMHO
