My daughter just called...

... and I was pleasantly surprised. You see I've been trying to nudge her towards numismatics for the last several years. Sure she has some albums she fiddles with, but mostly when I ask her to sit down with me and go through some coins though. Lately though she's shown zero interest... ya know... now being a "teenager" and all.

Well anyway she just called while out shopping with her mom. The conversation when something like this....

Me: Hello

Her: Is there a new type of penny out? (I'll work on the "cent" thing later)

Me: Well, yes there is.

Her: Man, nobody tells me anything. I just got one with Lincoln sitting on a log fishing or something and it's nice. I put it in a safe place in my purse.

Me: Cool, I'll show you what's going on with the cents tomorrow.

Her: You better.

Then the usual bye bye stuff.

It dang near brings a tear to my eye. image

Kind of funny, I just finally got the exact same cent in change today for the first time, and I was going to call you and ask what was up too. image

That cent was just an excuse for her to call and say she loved you. Seriously.

Ok... they're back from shopping. The cent got put in a 2x2 and here it is... She then pulled out her "stash box" and organized it. I've discovered the dang kids got more stuff than me. image

That is cool. I have two sons in their mid-twenties. Same story, no interest in coins. Both have worked in retail while attending college. Two or three times over the last eight or so years one or the other has come home and said "look at what I was given in change today - thought you'd like to have it". I've gotten two buffalo nickels, a Canadian cent and a Bermudan cent that way. While they do not share my enthusiasm for coins, they do keep the old man and his interests in mind.

When my kids were younger I could not get them interested in coin collecting at all, but every year they received a nice couple of coins from me at Christmas. Because of their lack of interest one year I gave them something in place of the coins, and they both came up to me and asked why I didn't get them any coins. I was shocked and surprised. Just because they appeared to have a complete lack of interest didn't mean they didn't like coins. My son is 27, and let's just say my daughter is his big sister. They still get coins from me every Christmas. The big difference now is I have to get something for the daughter-in-law, son-in-law, and the three grand babies!

Don't you just love it when you find out your kids really do share some of your interest even if it isn't with your same passion! image
