I just received a PCGS slabbed coin from a smokers household. Will that fact eventually hurt my coin

When I opened the package the smell just rolled out. The strength of the smell was amazing....bad!
It got me to wondering if the smoke & or smell will permenate the plastic or coin and eventually show signs of the smoke. What's your take?????

I think that you could wipe it a few times with some rubbing alcohol and TP or Kleenex and that should eventually tame it. Depends on how long he/she had it too.

    Relax.

If it makes you feel better, wipe down the outside of the slab with a cloth or something.

    It will be fine.

Yes, coins do "turn" in slabs, and nicotine can leave a residue, but I would say the chances of the coin being affected in this case are very slim and not worth worrying about.

I never had any coins go bad on me when I was an indoor smoker.

There should be nothing to worry about.

Great question. One that has been asked (and addressed) many times before.

You can air it out OR place in fabric softener box or anything that smells nice and
in rather short order it should do away with any and all undesirable odors.

It may have an odor now but shouldn't suffer any permanent or long-lasting damage.

    Hope this helps.

My entire Lincoln collection sat in an open air condo on the ocean in the Caribbean...nothing has happened yet.

Pray you never buy a book from a smoker. Smokers have no idea how badly they stink.image

    No. The smell dissipates eventually.

Lots of rolls and lots of different smells that eventually go away.
I decided to change calling the bathroom the John and renamed it the Jim. I feel so much better saying I went to the Jim this morning.

It is mostly the packaging material. This happens to me on occasion. Most importantly, get the packaging material to the outside trash can ASAP. Leave the coins out in the garage for a couple of weeks spread out on a table and they'll be fine too. --Jerry

I heard once that the mint workers used to smoke at the mint back in the early 19th Centuryimage

darn smokers!!!!! Neg him if he did not mention he stores his coins in a polluted atmosphere. Smokers should be required to list in the auction they smoke.

Get some of those wet wipes that take the cr#p off of baby butts. Wipe them down and flush after using.

What was the life expectancy back then?

I suspect you could find rampant smoking by mint workers in all the buildings up into the early 1960s when US and UK researchers started really publishing their smoking-to-cancer research full steam. People have to try to remember that smoking was generally considered less obnoxious than chewing gum up until the late 60s. And if you let on that it bothered you were either a prissy girl or male that should have been named Mary.

Clean your slab with a strong dose of windex. Windex fixes everything.

That's harsh, return the coin if you aren't satisfied. Neg happy ebayers are ruining ebay. I don't like the smell of smoke either but that is rediculous.

Definitely an over-reaction. Stop trying to run others' lives. Some of the most intolerant people I've ever met were the ones preaching "tolerance for other people's choices".

You can some times see smoke floating in some sellers coin pics.

I think it was in the 30's or low 40's. People didn't live long enough for smoking to kill them. --Jerry

The statistical cancer rate of coins subjected to smoke is astonishingly high. I'd return it and let the seller know that.
