I like them, but I'm just a type collector. This one has been dipped bright, but I still like the look of it. The Arrows and Rays type is not easy to find in true Mint State.
Retired dealer and avid collector of U.S. type coins, 19th century presidential campaign medalets and selected medals. In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?
I have an 1840(O) Reverse of 1838 at PCGS presently. It will be in a Genuine holder, but I ask myself; when and where would I ever find another, much less one better? Take a look at a recent pop. report for both sides of the street on this one and you will sense my anticipation for getting this one back in hand.
Southcounty! Awesome pics and collection..ohhh and you too Dizzyfoxx
I love all half dollars. The biggest impediment for me and the Seated Liberty halves are the vast number of years they were minted. Just too many dates. Harry Laibstain had the sweetest XF 1878-S half dollar for sale a couple of weeks back. Anyone else see it? To do a matched set of VF-XF halves would truly be a sight to behold and a challenge to assemble.
Thanks for the nice comments guys. I like the looks of all of the other coins posted as well. I have watched dizzyfoxx pick up several nice seated half dollar coins over the past couple of months that I had been watching and pondering as well. I think he has some great taste in coins considering the quality of his recent acquisitions.
Coinlieutenant – those seated halves are all monsters, that 51-O really sings to me!
To answer a few questions I have received:
Yes, that is what a nearly complete date and mint mark seated half dollar collection in PCGS plastic looks like all set out. Some of the coins are still in NGC and ANACS holders as well. I may cross them at some point, but it is not the most important thing to me at this point. I am working on the set in XF to AU grade with some PQ VF coins as well. Some of the rare die marriages are basically in any condition I can find.
The collection is by date and mint mark as well as by WB number and die marriage for certain dates. The 56-S, 57-S, 60-S, and 42-O are now complete by die marriage. Several other dates are close to being complete. The stacked holders are generally the same date and mintmark with either a different die marriage or a WB variety.
Yes, my icon is an Oregon State Beaver, smacking a Boise State Bronco. Go Beavs!
I have had a few of the coins that I sent in to be graded true viewed as well.
Here's most of my set. I have an 1861-S AU-50 ANACS old photo cert. that looks way undergraded and an 1876-S NGC MS60 in a old fatty holder with beautiful deep toning. Didn't bother posting them because the pics won't do them justice. BTW, really love the eye candy posted by everyone. Southcounty's collection really made me drool! Please give me first diggs on some pieces if you sell your collection!
Southcounty, that is simply an amazing collection! The first words out of my mouth was Holy you know what. I'll be happy if I ever own that many slabbed coins in my lifetime, and you've managed that many just in LSHs!
That's the second largest group of mid grade seated halves I've ever seen displayed on one table at a time. I'm not telling the other, but most are still raw. I personally like the big sisters:
Only four more holes in the set! Layed out by decade...

>>
These two coins also exhibit a great comparison to the reverse die for the 77-S. If you look closely you will see that your reverse exhibits a closed bud reverse and my coin has an open bud reverse under the branch. A point of interest to seated half specialists would be the fact that my example also has the thin more defined veins in the leaves that are usually associated with the closed bud reverse and not the open bud reverse, where the leaf veins were thicker and not as sharply defined. Thus my example is what is called a transitional reverse or type 1/2. Which appears to be quite rare. The variety for the 77-S was not listed in the original WB book but has since been listed in Bill Bugert's new half dollar book where it was given an R5 rarity rating. From talking with some dealers and other collectors I personally think it may be significantly higher than an R5. I have not seen a single example listed with Dick Osburn, or any other dealer for that matter, over at least the past five years. The last LSCC half dollar census showed only two examples with only one in UNC.
On a side note I purchased my transitional reverse 77-S off of ebay on a buy it now special. I suspected that it was the transitional reverse but was not certain until it showed up. I was really pleased with the coin so I sent it to PCGS and got a true view as well. It is always an adventure purchasing raw high grade coins off of ebay.

Speety you know I love those big sisters as well! I just have more holes for now. I love seeing the coins all layed out like this.
I don't really have the table room to set out the raw halves.
I am more of a lurker on these boards, but I do post more often over on the the LSCC/old Fortin message board.

We've had a similar discussion over at the LSCC forum before, but I am still very impressed with the seated halves! I just have more dollars in my layout than before so wanted to show em I haven't seen you post as much in the dollar section lately, but it's been pretty slowwwww so I haven't posted much either.

As with the Eliasberg coins, some of them have been cracked out and reholdered.
Here's mine...another 1858.

Like you, I like nice circulated Seated halves, 'cause that is usually all I can afford. You have some great ones there!
A proof Seated half is a joy to behold, and if you add color and/or CAM contrast to it, look out! I start salivatin'.
I don't care a bit if BillJones' piece was dipped- that is stunning. White, colorful, crusty, etc.- I like 'em all!
