Got an 1854 T2 Gold Dollar in today..and discovered a SWEET SURPRISE

The USPS was very good today to me. Ten Gold Dollars arrived today (more on that Later image )

The big surprise was when I took a good close look at the 1854 Type 2 and realized that it was actually the Doubled Die Obverse, Breen 6037, with the triple row of beads. Im not sure at this point the exact rarity of this specimen, but I have found only 11 records of this coin, dating back to 1999. Breen stated that it was "extremely rare". By comparison, there have been 961 1854 Type 2 G$1 auctions through Heritage over that same span of time.

So, little coins sometimes carry big rewards...especially when the dealer dosent take the time to get out the Loupe and really study them!

In that grade the premium is about $100 over a normal piece.

Sweet! Nice to have a variety image
  • I am glad that the surprise was not the "X" on the obverse in front of the portrait.

The slab is very scratched up. worked on it a bit with the slab renew...but I think it needs a reholder eventually. The dies are severely clashed...the reverse has got an upside down liberty one it, and what you see on the front fields are the wreath clash marks.

Dang, 10 coins all at once? Any more than 2 would be a record for me.

"later" is later....guys gotta get some work done ya know! after dinner. A few are 'fresh meat; but quite a few are named and discussed already...just took so long to wrap a few deals up and holy moly the post system is crawling along..........................................................................................
  • Nice pick up man! I like the overall look and there does look like some meat is still there.image

Yup.... when 'ol Walt Breen says something is 'extremely rare'....it kind of makes you get a warm fuzzy feeling! seeing 11 auction appearances for that variety, and 961 for the regular coin, not even counting what ones have sold over the counter everywhere...pretty neat!

gotta go home and fry some shrimp now.

Ive just been in contact with David Lange at NGC.....and after they discussed this, they will recognize and label this variety. I suppose this is the first one they've done.

Just getting sweeter all the time! ...and the nice this is now I get to buy a NON doubled die also!

In addition to the triple row of beads the known specimens all have a severe die clash on the reverse which gives a full reversed portrait of Liberty.
