Washington Quarter expert opinion requested...

Hello all-

I found the 1942 Washington Quarter in the photo below at a local shop, and when I looked at it at home closely, noticed that the lips especially and front profile of Washington seem doubled, including the chin. Even the back side of Washington's portrait in fact appears a little strike doubled but the motto and date are normal. I looked through the cherrypicker's guides, but only found one example of this type of portrait doubling error for the 1943-D Quarter (the book says that "the doubling is evident on the chin, ear, hair curls and queue."). But the guide does not discuss doubling of the lips. And the photo is included in the guide, it does not show the front side of Washington's portrait, nor is any indication given for the error in 1942 quarters.

Does anyone have any experience with these errors or an opinion from my photo? Any information would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Duane

Looks like common machine doubling to me.

  • My opinion was that it was a common machine double die, as well.

I just don't understand the cherrypicker's guide error on the '43-D with similar description and photos. So I have sent my photo to Kevin Flynn, and he will hopefully have an opinion on the subject, as he did write a book on Washington Quarters and variations.

But thank you all for your respective answers. Will keep you posted if Kevin does not reply here directly.
