I don't have a pic but what the heck is this coin?

ok the coin is a 1976 p penny with what looks to me as the state of Alabama stamped just to the right of lincoln's face and also in the state outline stamp is AL stamped

never heard of this before is it like a mason stamp type from the 200th birthday of the USA or just some crappy stamp someone was playing around?

here's my 2 cents...

  • Its a counter stamp. Im sure some others here will have more info, but from what I can remember, theyre not rare?

Pretty much... and you can find them with all 50 states too! A lot ok Kennedy ones are out there & other misc. stamps as well... image
  • I've searched like 40-50 boxes of pennies and yet this is the 1st I've ever seen don't seem to be very common...

  • Yea, you might not find them in circulation that often. That doesnt mean they are rare or even scarce. Cool find though regardless.
  • where are they all hiding? and was it just a 1976 thing or are they happening every year?
    here's my 2 cents...
  • Well, Im sure some are in dealers cases, and some in collectors sets. Also, any year is out there I assume. You can take any cent, or any coin and stamp it with anything you like.

image Check some old auction catalogs from Stacks or Heritage. Usually you can find afew coins with counter stamps on them.

You can probably find a bunch on eBay.

I think they are all hiding in the coin dealer's "junk/token" boxes that you can pick through at 3/$1 & 4/$1... I see 'em at the coin shows all the time.

Just to be clear: These were done by private individuals after the coins were made. They weren't done by the US Mint. There is no collector value to them other than for the the novelty.

I remember those. Those were popular novelties when I started collecting, back in '76. You could buy the whole set of cents with counterstamps of all fifty states, mounted into a cardboard frame thingie.

I seriously doubt that but if you do, then provide some pictures.

I would characterize them also as "rare-in-nature".... meaning you don't see them everyday. I have one counterstamped with JFK on the obverse. My father-in-law has a commercially-sold framed set of fifty lincoln pennies counter stamped with each state on them. No real value other than sentimental.

I think they're more of a conversational piece than anything else. After searching many a roll in my time, I consider anything out of the ordinary a good find.
