New to collecting... Again

I'm thinking about getting back into cards after a 20 year hiatus, so I'm looking for some advice. I'd love to do Topps Heritage Baseball sets since I like the look of the cards, but was wondering what years are better than others. Noticed that the 2007 boxes are about $50 - would that be a good "try out"? I love putting sets together from packs (as my large box of 90-91 UD Hockey image will attest). Do you stand any hope of coming close to recouping your investment, or are these done purely for the fun. My last baseball set is from 1984...

Thnaks for any advice, and if you know anyone looking for common junk UD hocket cards from the early 90's, let me knowimage

Hardly any chance of breaking even.

Just for fun; like the hockey cards you want to give away.

    Lots of fun, though.

  • I love building sets from wax boxes that are not worth what it would cost me to ship them. It's always a good reminder that this is a hobby and not an investment.
  • Im with LSU , i bought a huge collection of around 150,000 cards for $100 bucks . The boxes have all 4 major sports and
i have been going thru them to see which sets i can finish cheaply . I just couldnt leave the sets 99% complete., had to
finish them . Almost all the card are from 1986-1996

Wait...I'll have to check my advisor - Bernie Madoff. image

Hi pbyco and welcome back to the hobby.

My advice is always to collect what really gives ya enjoyment and if something happens to appreciate? Consider it a bonus.

I've been doing the Heritage sets since they started in 2001 - great set - very difficult to complete from packs. In fact, I didn't do a set this year to keep on budget.

Whatever year you decided to do - more recent would be more affordable - the SP's will kill ya! I was NOT able to complete a set with all SP's in any year after buying a full case.

If ya decided to buy - let's say 2007? I think ya could possibly trade and get SP's from members here - LMK what you decide - I'll help ya all I can.

Good luck - I'm assuming you collect coins?

  • What year Heritage would be a good start? I'd imagine the earlier years are cost prohibitive for "hobby" purposes?

Where would be a good place to get unopened boxes?

Thaks for all of the great comments!

2009 heralded the 1960 Topps style - so work backwards to the style you most appreciate.

Now, if ya go back to 2008 - 1959 Topps style, here's a guy on ebay offering a 12 box case for $675 or best offer - I would guess if one offered 600$, he might grab it and at 50 bucks a box? Not bad IMO.

    2008 Topps Heritage BB

So, I would check ebay - I googled 2008 Topps Heritage baseball e.g.

Also, check out webs like Blow out cards, I bought a case from them last year at a good price. Ya gonna have to contact them for current pricing on the 2008 and 2007 Heritage BB.

There's plenty of other sellers of these cases like Dave and Adam e.g. - also you can check and see what BBCExchange has.
