NGC Toned Coin Authenticity on AT Coins

I am on pcgs.com message boards, so it's fair to say I'm biased towards buying pcgs graded toned coins.

It seems like ngc grades a lot of toned-coins. Is it fair to say (tell me if it's not!) that ngc is a little lax in saying a coin has artifiicial toning vs. the more rigid "at" pcgs grading standards?

Thanks for any thoughts.... image

I wouldn't think that was fair to say at all, the most obvious AT'd coins I have seen in TPG holders wer in PCGS holders. Really well doctored coins are difficult for anyone to tell, that's why I avoid paying a big premium for toners.

Anyone have pics of that PCGS silver eagle piece that was floating around?

Not true at all. I sent in 10 coins, all were rainbow or slightly toned. NGC bagged 3 of them. One is a Peace dollar I bought raw.

What is funny about the peace dollar is I have a VERY similar one in my collection that slabbed by NGC!

So its hard to determine how "lax" or strict they are when it comes to toners.

No, I find as many toned coins in PCGS slabs as NGC, and IMO neither gets it right.

I'm not saying these are AT or NT because I don't know either way. However, if these were in NGC slabs, I could almost guarantee that most here would declare them no brainer AT.

  • I always thought from what we have seen in the marketplace, that NGC would grade any toned coin you'd send their way, it is almost like they have such a fascination with toned coins, they grade them, and give them little grading bumps.
You will see AT coins in both NGC and PCGS holders, it is bound to happen, not everybody can tell an AT coin from a NT coin, even the best.

I don't care if that coin is NT, AT, or came out of the back end of an elephant. It is pretty!

I see more unique old toned material in NGC, not that it is to say it is AT, but you rarely see any NGC Silver eagles with those outlandish tonings. Those are always in PCGS. 2008 fully toned eagles in 5o color swirls in less than a year and they go right into those pcgs holders.

I'm also on the PCGS boards, but am not biased towards buying PCGS graded toned coins. I also disagree with your opinion on AT vs. NT for NGC vs. PCGS.

  • Isn't it well known that many of the ridiculous AT examples in PCGS/NGC holders are holdered as white coins and then toned in the holder? Coin Chemistry by Weimar White even has a section on that with his experimental results, if I remember correctly. Then things like that PCI/PCGS dollar, who knows how they pass. Braddick, did you submit that coin yourself?

PCGS toners are more market acceptable than NGC toners - at least on the CU/PCGS message boards.

TPG photos for every coin at slabbing time would help.

PCGS seems to not like NGC toners lately. At least that is my personal experience.

I guess they have to have a sticker to be sure!!! image

This is inline with both PCGS and NGC becoming tighter on toners, unless the NGC toners were slabbed very recently.

That ASE has to be one of the most famous PCGS coins ever. I remember when it was on sale for a couple hundred dollars!

I also remember when some numbskull had it on eBay for 10K.

Both services do a reasonably good job. Seems like they both have periods when they are lax and very tight. Perhaps these periods coincide with hiring new graders.

Some services mitigate this by letting you know who the grader is. Others prefer to withhold that information.

Both services are very tough lately, equally tough, because too much AT garbage is in both major TPG slabs,so i agree with Tom.JMHO

    Hopefully those aren't getting stickers.
  • That Eagle with the wild colors in the PCGS slab destroys their credibility. If that coin is naturally toned I will donate all my coins to charity.

seems to me like they are more or less equally inconsistent
