I do not recall seeing that one before, but die rotations of approximately 180 degrees are relatively common during the Civil War, especially in 1864. Presumably they hired a new die setter and didn't train him well.
1861 is a bit early for this.

Thanks for the quick and informative reply. I ordered the coin online (seller made no mention of the rotation) to crack out for my Dansco 7070 set. I love the coin (much nicer than my lousy pic) but an "upside-down" reverse isn't exactly what I had in mind for my album. ...decisions, decisions... -Preussen

  • This is my 1861 with 180 degree die rotation. If you ever want that in a registry set, do not submit it for the error designation! I didn't know better when I bought it for my type set, now I need another. But this is a keeper! I'd say keep it for your 7070, it's a cool error. It would be a nice teaching tool if you want to show someone the difference between a coin and medal turn.

If anyone knows the possible population of this error for the '61, I'd love to know.

Nice one, Mar327 . I really like the one I received, but I'm just not sure the 180° rotated reverse is right for my 7070 album...this development was certainly unexpected. I bought the coin from a great dealer who would accept a return with no questions, but I haven't decided what to do yet. -Preussen

Edited to add: I just read your edited comments and your vote for me to keep it for the 7070; thanks.

I have seen several of these, but they are nowhere near as common as the 1864 2c piece.

Yup, this one is well known. I agree with Mr. Uhrich, the 1864 2c 180-degree rotation is very easy to find.
