Why do I suspect all my 2000/2001 gold/platinum/bullion/commems will no longer be good for my 1900 sets???? I guess the existing sets will never be eligible for pedigree. I wonder what content surprises we'll have? I suspect a 65/66/67 SMS coin will be required in the proof sets, since PCGS calls these proof for registry purposes (but lists them with MS in the pop & price guides).

  • Brian,
That is why I was waiting on purchasing coins for my 1900- Present set. I was hoping for a mint state only version which they have added and for the weighting system to come out. I am a little surprised by the date changes though.
  • It looks good to me. Still to come would be the complete type set and any "basic" complete type set.

The 1900-present is now a Twentieth Century type set. That is cool with me. Might slightly bother those with Y2K coins, even though technically the year 2000 was the last year of the 20'th Century so a 20'th Century set really should be the years 1901 to 2000. But most people think of the 20'th Century as being all those years that begin with 19xx image

The new Modern Type set will be the one that grows as 21'th Century types get created. I'm sure Y2K gold, commems and bullion will still be just fine in this set.

What new types does the new Modern set get by changing the start date to 1950? Naturally the wheat ear reverse Lincoln.

Keith D. can play in the 20'th Century Circulation strike type set and I can play with 20'th Century proof types. We can both stay in the combined set.

So now I need an early proof Lincoln, T1 Buffalo and Mercury dime to complete that set. I'm probably forgetting something...

Good thing they didn't tell me about the weights yet!!! It is already information overload for me!

When will this change take place? When will the 1959- date set be replaced by the 1950- date? Other than a WheatBack cent and the Franklin half I can't see another coin needed? Oh, maybe a silver Roosevelt and silver Washington. Will there be a chance for Set collectors to gather these needed coins before changing the rankings?

  • Pat,

New sets go up usually 1 week after the weighting scheme is posted unless the collectors riot over the weightings.

My guess here is that the sets are still the 1959-forward sets (not 1950) and that the compositions will most likely not change much, if at all. Only real difference is that a new version of the modern is added for the proof collector and a new version is added for the MS collector, as well as a new combined set for the Clad modern sets.

    D. Hall typically has referred to the 59-forward sets as 50-forward sets in the e-mail exchanges that we have had discussing the sets, so it is possible that this is just a typo on his part, and that no new coins will be required for the set.

  • Looks like it should satisfy most of us image I would hope that the sets go from 1900 to 2000 since that is the 20th century.

One more thing I forgot in my first post:

Since most of the series have not been weighted, this pretty much confirms my idea that the slot will be weighted for Type sets, and that the actual date you use will not matter. So if you have a common date Washington quarter from 1957 in MS-67, it will get more points than a 32-D in MS-65 for Type purposes. I believe that most Type collectors already subscribe to that theory.

There I fixed the dates as they should be:

    20th Century Type Set CS/PR 1900 to 2000
20th Century Type Set CS 1900 to 2000
20th Century Type Set PR 1900 to 2000
Modern Type Set CS/PR 1959 to present
Modern Type Set CS 1959 to present
Modern Type Set PR 1959 to present

I checked with BJ, and got confirmation that the modern sets' start date will be changed to 1950 from 1959. I assume that this adds a Lincoln Wheat and Franklin. Not sure if this adds silver Washingtons or Roosevelts. I suppose the pre 1966 Jeffs could be included since they had a different designer initials location.

Homerunhall has started a PCGS inquiry thread on the subject with a couple of questions for input.

Should point out that the 20th Century set is slated to end at 1999, so all of those 2000 and 2001 coins will not be allowed in the set as they are currently envisioning it.

You know, this 20th Century Type Set is going to hurt bad!

    There goes my...
    MS70 $5G (2001)
    MS69 $50AGE (2000)
MS68 Sac (2001) -- But no Sacs, so no replacement needed!
    MS68 Kennedy (2001)
    MS68 State Quarter (2000/2001)
    MS68 Roosevelt (2001)
    MS67FS Jefferson (2001)
    MS68 Lincoln (2001)

    Brian,

Looks like you might be losing a few of those for the 1900 (or 01) to 1999 (or 2000) set, but if you stay active with the 1950-present set, I believe that this set will be an ongoing set.

    Keith,
With all the supergrades that came out in 2001, I sold off most of my 66/67 modern material. To stay in the 20th Century set, I'll need some back.

  • Greg,
Can you find out what coins will be added to the 1900 - 1999 MS set and the 1950-Present MS set so we can start buying the coins we need?

    Thanks
  • Hey Brian, are you thinking about the 1950-present set? That new set will include your "MS70 $5G (2001) + MS69 $50AGE (2000)". The 20'th Century set never had them. You might be in good shape...
  • Maybe we'll find out tomorrow what the composition changes are.

    Dennis,

For the MS side, I don't think that there will be any changes except a year cutoff on the 1900 set and eliminating those three proof coins that are currently required, unless they add examples of classic and modern commems to the set.

Well I was able to find pretty examples of the Wheat cent (MS67red); silver Roosevelt (MS67 brilliant- forget about finding one in MS68!).
Teletrade had a nice MS67 silver Washington and a MS66FBL Franklin (with red/green toning) tonight, so I'm all set to add these four coins if need be.
I do know this- I doubt if I'll ever own a Franklin in MS67 or a Washington in MS68.

Oh, I sure hate the idea of having to one day upgrade the MS69 gold/silver Commemoratives to MS70's.

  • Braddick.
Are you sure they are going to include a wheat cent, franklin and silver roosevelt dime in the 1950-present set? Even when the registry set dates were 1959-present, 1959 - 64 silver dimes were not included as well as the franklin that were issued in 1959 - 63.
  • keithdagenkeithdagen Posts: 2,025
Braddick can always start a 1900-99 set with those four pieces if they aren't needed.

Has anyone received any feedback from PCGS staff clarifying the issues we discussed on this thread and the other?? I would have thought that we would have heard more as to what direction they were leaning.

Good point- but they're pretty coins and I did alright on the prices. My gut tells me though when the new 1950 to date Registry kicks in they will be a part of it.
