FAKE 1858 Gold Dollar PULLED from Ebay!

ambro51ambro51 Posts: 13,836 ✭✭✭✭✭
I dont know if it was me raising holy hell with the seller, or reporting this to ebay...but anyway it has been pulled.

Man alive that got me so ticked off last night...and then some Geeinuss on the forum saying something like "well its OK cuz its not really a counterfeit cuz anacs didnt send it to the secret service etc etc so he should be allowed to sell it cuz he dont know for sure ANACS only said Altered Coin Questionable Authenticity NO SERVICE etc etc" YIKES what a mixed up line of reasoning that was.

Thankfully it is off ebay at least for another two and a half months!

Moral of the STORY>>>>> Trust NO Raw Gold. Trust NO Raw Gold. Trust NO Raw Gold.

Congrats Ambro. I'm glad it's off the bay.

I wasn't trying to be difficult. I just wanted to make sure ANACS wasn't being misrepresented.

Maybe the better thing to do would be to trust the seller???

Or, buy only from the US MINT.

Kind of tough when you're doing dollar gold though, eh?

That poor seller....plus what I sent him in the way of emails....Ive heard from a few VERY heavy hitters that have contacted him. He probably didnt realize Im on chatty email terms with the President of the ANA image

He needs a cave to crawl into now.image

I got a nickel that sure looks legit. This was purchased at a local coin shop. If it can fool me in hand, but it doesn't fool Mr Weinberg via photos on eBay... well , I'm just glad to be associated to this place. This helps me save humiliation down the road and in this case; return fees, grading fees and overall headaches. I agree with Andy Lustig on trust... I know the coins I've submitted to PCGS are authentic and what isn't, is duly noted.

Kudos to Fred Weinberg for the "heads up" along with a few others through the eBay message system.

It's good to hold the candle, and I'm pondering sending the coin in because it weighs exactly five grams.
But... based on the few who messaged me, ... that would likely be a waste of money, too.

Maybe it's another specimen for the ANA's school ?

  • i wonder how many legitimate coins are pulled from ebay because someone says its fake. something to consider.

I'm sure that would be a welcome addition to the ANA counterfeit collection.

It was quite deceptive in hand. The color was off though......probably the quickest sign of counterfeit gold, yet the thing that you cannot trust in any way are the digital pictures of coins on the internet.

If they want to buy it, they know who the seller is image

Are coins typically donated to this collection? Could be pricey if it's real gold.

What happened to the post where you noted that it had been relisted?
  • ambro51ambro51 Posts: 13,836 ✭✭✭✭✭
    Home team removed it.

I got very angry with a comment made and deleted all my posts.....I suppose they 'got the message' that I wanted it gone.

That was fine. Some of the things I wrote were not very nice.

    All better now though.

After calling in my "heavy artillery" on this guy Im pretty sure he will be booted from the ANA.

How about this for a really wild idea? Maybe the best thing to do is to learn enough about coins that you can trust yourself?
