OT - What to do while in Williamsburg Virginia? (besides the obvious)

It's time for a little family getaway, and ever since my 3 year old daughter saw the commercial for "Push" Gardens, that's all she keeps asking about. I'm hoping that any of the members here that are local to the Williamsburg Virginia area might be able to point me in a few other directions too. We are definitely going to Busch Gardens and Water Country USA (we're not going to Colonial Williamsburg), but I was wondering what else there might be to do in that area? With a 3 year old we wont be doing any of the historic sight stuff, but any help with other sights, dining, shopping, etc.... (maybe a card shop or two too, but shhhh) would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance for any help.

I spent four years there getting a JD/MBA. Great Place. Here are some highlights.

Take a tour of William and Mary campus.
    Visit Wren Building.
    Yorktown Battlefield.
    Colonial Parkway is amazing.
    Jamestown is fun.
Take a ferry across James river.
    Great golfing too.

    PM me with any questions.
Kiss me once, shame on you.
    Kiss me twice.....let's party.

Interesting. I am taking my family there in a few weeks....sort of. My wife is a teacher and has the summer off. I just started a new job and cannot get any time off so I am towing our travel trailer 6 hours form just outside Phila., PA. and driving back home. Then going back down to tow them back the following week. My in-laws are driving there Durango and staying with them so they will be able to go places. I am definately not looking forward to the long drives but my kids have been asking to go to Williamsburg to learn more about Colonial America. Oh well.....

  • Jamestown is a great place for a family and small children.
The ships are neat, but the Indian villages and the fort are a great place for small kids to run around.

You can get dressed up in a confederate soldier's outfit and stand in front of a loaded cannon. That's something to do.

This might be out of your range of travel, but you could head to Charlottesville- about 2 hours or so west. Home to UVA- tour the Grounds, Rotunda. Just outside of town and about 10 minutes from where I live is Monticello- Thomas Jeferson's home and Ashlawn- James Monroe's home. 2 big ebay sellers- cavaliercards and bigtop55 have card stores as well. Funny thing is that they're probably only 1/2 mile apart.
Looking for low #'d 2006 Marques Hagans + 1991 Wild Card stripes of UVA players - Tony Covington, Shawn Moore, Herman Moore
  • Other Virginians can chime in -- but if you are an amusement park person -- Busch Gardens probably is geared more towards older folks. Kings Dominion in Doswell on Rt 95 is more kid friendly, plus their water park is in the same park.

We've had season passes at both -- and I know my wife and I like the shows, the shops, the restaurants better at Busch Gardens -- but for young kids the Kidzone at Kings Dominion is far superior.

And Scott is right CavalierCards is a must see when in Virginia. That would be the shameless self promotion plug.
  • I don't know enough about you and your family to give great recommendations, however, I can hook you up with a guy who does neat (and cheap) "couple hour" canoe trips down little rivers near the area if that's your thing. My girl and I did one and had a great time even though she'd never used a canoe before.

If you're coming through Richmond and have any specific questions let me know and I'll help you out as much as I can. I don't know of any heavy hitter card shops but there are plenty of things to do depending on your interests.

  • Still to this day I have a hatred towards king dominon. My parents found out that they has scooby, my favorite as a kid, as a character at the park. Well dont you know it, during our 3 day stop on the way to Sandbrige,VA , Scoobydoo was "sick" and not there!

Shopping - Williamsburg Pottery (questionable) and some good outlets
Dining - Locals swear that you have to try the peanut soup.
Card Shops - Not familiar with any shops in the area.
Other things to do - Colonial Downs, mainly turf racing through July, less than an hour from Williamsburg. You win enough on the ponies to pay for the trip and your little one will probably like going to the paddock to see the horses walked and saddled. Virginia Beach - fairly close, but a little too crowded for my tastes. Norfolk - Spirit of Norfolk river cruise and Naticus museum. Newport News - Virginia Living Museum, interesting exhibits and when I went years ago passed a snake around for everyone to hold/touch which made an impression on my kids.

Assume you are going to Lurray Caverns. If this is the case you will probably travel I-64 from Williamsburg to I-81 and up to the caverns, I would. I-64 will take you right through Charlottesville.
