Question about Original Bank Rolls

I was out searching for half dollars today and a very small town bank sold me $410 in rolls. The first roll I pulled out of the bag was loosely machine rolled on the ends and the paper looked old. The full roll was 1968-D. I dumped the rest of the bag.

29 of the rolls are what I think are original bank rolls. 17 are 1968-D, 1 is 1969-D, 2 are 1971-D (1 got opened), and 9 rolls have silver tails on both ends so I don't know what year they are. 5 of the hand rolls were also 1968-D rolls. I'm guessing the original rolls fell apart so they transferred them to new rolls. The other 7 hand rolls were 6 mixed 1966 to 1969-D full silver rolls and 1 roll with 2 40% silver and the rest clad.

I don't know much about original bank roll collecting so I wanted to get help from the people who do. Do these look like original rolls? Is there a premium for 40% silver halves in the original rolls?

Thanks for any help you can give me.

Not yet. But it is probable that a premium will develop in the future.

Wow, nice score! By the looks of the wrappers, I doubt any of them are original rolls though. To the best of my knowledge, that style of "Brandt" crimped-end wrapper didn't exist in the 1960's. The 40% silver Kennedy halves never circulated much to begin with, so the premium for BU rolls is nominal and tends to coincide/fluctuate with the price of silver. Still, based on current silver spot price they're worth about 3.5~4x face, which is not too shabby image

They're not original. There is a premium over face for 40% silver. PM me for details if you want to get rid of them. I'm always looking to hook up the collector to the dealer and vice versa. It's a joy to be associated with coin people. They're the nicest and usually the most well spoken of all citizens.

Of course, I'm a geek and biased.

Half dollar rolls are $10.00 per roll.image

Oh, but they did, they did! And some of these rolls look original and unopened, to me.

And, looking at the assortment of flapped end rolls, it appears that some of them are recent and some are older.

I have bought some OBW 1965-1969 rolls and usually the quality isn't that great, but that's what roll collecting is all about. Someday, somewhere......someone will open those rolls, and that's why OBW rolls usually carry a premium. Think Forrest Gump. You never know what you could find!

    Excellent find, Fropa.

If you can't stand having them around, try putting these up on B-S-T.image

Thanks for the help everybody. I ended up opening the tails only rolls and they were all 1968-D rolls. I left 16 1968-D and the 1 1969-D in the paper rolls. Total of the silver was:

    6 - 1966
    69 - 1967
    657 - 1968-D
    30 - 1969-D

TwoSides2aCoin - Thanks for the offer to help me sell them. I think for now I'll just add them to my silver stash and wait for the price of silver to go back to the 1979-80 levels.
