Will The New Weights Affect Prices

A comment that Mitch made in another thread suggested this topic: "will the weights and bonuses that PCGS is adopting influence what buyers are willing to pay for coins to add to their registry sets?"

I hope not, but (sorry to say) I believe that some dealers may price their product with those weights and bonuses in mind.

One other point: IMHO top-pop coins probably don't get enough credit in the PCGS system, so I don't think it will be used to exaggerate prices of stuff that is already pricey. That goodness! image

    Gerry: From my experience, the new weights have affected prices already. I will not get into the details, but it involved a coin from the 1936-1942 era where the addition of cameo and DCAM, as well as bonus points results in a high grade non-cameo coin not being as desireable to my customer anymore due to his chances of locating a cameo or DCAM piece, even if a grade or two lower. Like you mentioned on the 1951 Lincoln, it is possible that a PR67DCAM can get the weight of a PR71!! Hence, the super high grade proofs will now have to compete with lower grade CAM or DCAM coins.

    In conclusion, the answer to your question I believe is "yes".

    Now, having said that, I would also say that the impact appears more on the proof side. For example, I have seen absolutely no softening of finest known Mint State priced coins even where the coins get relatively low weight. Indeed, some of the completed sales on the MS side suggest that the artifically low weights have had -0- impact on the demand of these MS coins. image

    I have to agree with Mitch.The bonus points will affect the prices realized.In fact they already have and did even before they were known.Just the mention that there would be started the prices to climb.

    Maybe I am all wet here but these are just a couple of thoughts.
      The PCGS registries have enhanced the value of thier product IMO. The weighting of Coins will surely also add to the enhancement of thier product also.
        Did PCGS just Fall into this or was it a Well thought out Marketing Stratagy? Either way it sure looks like PCGS will reap the rewards of the weighting program by attracting more coins for submissions and inclusion into Registry Sets. I know the Registry people are a very small amount of the Collecting Community but do we know how many other Collectors actually watch Us and base thier buying habits on what is said here.
          Myself for one has noticed that in the last 2 to 3 months the price of coins within the series I collect has increased. Is this just a common Winter occurance, a reaction about the Economy or maybe the introduction of the Weighting System? I do not know. I do know that prices have been edging up and it appears to be only on PCGS coins.
            Just thoughts. Like I said I might be all wet here. Take Care:Ken
