NEWP Closed 3 Shield Nickel in XF+!!

DieClashDieClash Posts: 3,688 ✭✭✭
I recently pulled the trigger on an 1873 Closed 3 Shield Nickel on the bay. This is a very nice XF+ specimen and I am quite pleased. So to share my happiness here are a few pix for fellow Shield Nickel enthusiasts (not sure how good these images are): image

Better than XF on your '73 DC.
I'm no expert but these Shield Nickels are real spooky!

I'm going to try to keep this thread going DC.

Shield nickels are a very cool series and it's a shame that more peoples are not that interested.

    Here is another............crappy image. image

    Raybo, that's a very nice looking 83!

I just started collecting Shields this year. I love this series!

Here's a 75 over date w/some strike doubling on the obverse motto:

DieClash, if you want to use the terminology correctly, your coin has a repunched date (RPD), not an overdate (OVD). Overdates involve date punches from two different years.

BTW, the date on your '75 shows both an RPD (875 south) and possibly some strike doubling east (I'm not sure if the strike doubling is really there or I'm getting fooled by a reflection).

Lastly, your coin catalogs as 1875 S1-3000 (SNV) and F-01 (Fletcher).

I'm no expert on shield nickels but 'Howards' 1867 looks very strange. Counterfeit maybe??

    Howard,

Thanks for the "technical" lesson. I was thinking that the original date-stamp might be from a 3-cent Nickel because the overdate or in the correct vernacular the RPD seems to be larger than the underlying 1875. And it could be the result of strike doubling, I just don't know!. As I've indicated I'm just getting into this series and I really appreciate your expert analysis! Thanks!

I don't see any evidence that the underdate is smaller. It's just punched lower down on the coin.
  • I have a few.
