heh, heh, scooped Michigan on this one!
Storrs, Conn. (AP) -- Longtime University of Connecticut basketball coach Jim Calhoun shocked UConn Athletic Department officials by tendering his resignation and accepting a 3 year, $12 million offer to coach the Detroit Pistons. Calhoun saw this as an opportunity to re-unite with some of his past star players and possibly add a NBA title to his Hall of Fame coaching career. The Pistons confirmed the signing, and also confirmed that they are working with the Washington Wizards on a trade for Caron Butler. Asked if talks were in the works with the Bobcats for Emeka Okafor, Pistons officials flatly denied any such talks occured, but indicated that a free agent offer for Okafor in 2010 is a "possibility". Asked if he had any regrets about leaving Uconn, Calhoun said "none at all" and that he felt it was time to move on and take on a new challenge. He also said he was tired of being criticized for non taking a pay cut for being the "highest paid state employee" during the state's budget crisis.
