Help me see the altered surface on this coin - HUGE pictures

I'm missing something here. This is my 1890-CC Morgan that came back as altered surface. I don't see it, unless it's the few spots on the coin or maybe the haze? I don't remember the haze being there. Was this coin dipped a long time ago? It still has a nice cartwheel effect though.

  • Needs an acetone bath. Primary focus for me would be reverse fields surrounding IN GOD WE TRUST

Or, look at the cheek. I don't see anything but that is a focal area for shenanigans.

For some reason in the photo the cheek is dull. It shouldn't be dull. Rotate the coin under light and magnification focusing on the cheek.

I think there is a residue on the coin- both sides and could be what they are seeing and why it came back as it did

Cheek looks good, just to quadruple check it, I looked at it again with 10x and I cannot see any monkey business there. I'm leaning towards a residue being on the coin as coinkat said. I'll be debating an acetone bath possibly.

I also have an 1881-S that BB'd for same reason and it looked sharp also.

  • What ever is occurring in the corner of the eye draws my attention. If they are grooves, they seem very parallel

and could be considered suspicious perhaps.

It's some sort of contact marks and they made a small flat spot on the hair. I don't think it's anything someone was monkeying with though, as the grooves are not uniform in size or depth. It's a hit by something, not someone trying to do something.
  • I sent in two Morgans which I bought at the local B & M. surfaces both looked great. One came back 'altered suface'.

It would be nice if they would enclose an explaination. My 'altered surface' coin looks like all the other slabbed morgans i have.

Just too busy to bring it back to the coin shop and ask the owner his view. He's on this list, but it wouldn't be kind of me to mention his name, he
probably would never believe it came back un slabbable.

It looks like the breast of the eagle as been tooled with to blend in some other nicks....

Not tooling but rather numerous contact marks. Agree with those suggesting a hazy residue that will probably come off with a soak in acetone.

I think that area was worked on in an attempt to tone down those gouges......
  • That does strike me as an odd little arrangement of markings on the breast. Like Water Sport and yellowkid, I'd be suspicious of some metal being moved in an attempt to reduce the impact of some hits. That gouge behind the eye with a groove in the middle is another weird one. Could just be a cluster of hits on the breast, but I get the impression ridges could have been pushed in or cut.

I'm guessing the PCGS graders thought it was thumbed. Show it to a qualified expert in person and he/she can confirm for you

Here is my best guess from the photo--
I agree with the thumbing accessment. The horizontal gash going to the right from bottom point of the eyelid is dull , almost looks like it was filled in. There is another horizontal gash half way up the chin over in the center cheek area . It too is very dull not shiney. There is a semi circle (from under the chin to the nose tip) of not too wide patch of hairlines which is a grade sensitive area right in front of the face. It appears that it is hazed over showing a light grayish color tending to tone down the impact of this arc of hairlines. I have seen many coins hazed over to hide and minimize hairline impacts. These marks if shiney would be a much bigger distraction. All this is very subtle.
