The Card ID # on a PSA graded card

Hey guys,

I see many people whiteout or coverup the card # number (i think its called something different) when scanning a card.

What is the reason for this ?

Is it not good for someone to know this number ?

I have begun to serisouly pursue my collection (as PSA graded) in a way like never before.

Comments ?

thanks

I would guess to prevent people from taking the scan and setting up a fraudulent auction. Bidders would not be able to verify its authenticity.
  • Also to avoid the hassle of proving you own the card if you add it to a registry.

While there's a few good reasons why a COLLECTOR might want to block their numbers, anybody trying to sell you cards with the numbers blocked needs to be looked at very cautiously. There are good reasons scammers don't want you to know, make it difficult to obtain, or can't provide you this information or a "clean" picture. A good seller isn't afraid of what you'll find out if they provide you with this info.

People could use the ID# and see other cards submitted in the same submission. Some dealers for various reasons want to keep that info private.

Some counterfeiters use a "good cert number" to make fake flips, so when someone questions the card's authenticity, the number matches.

Someone stole a scan of a 1979 OPC Gretzky rookie psa 9 off of a website back in 2004 and sold me the scan. Lost thousands. It was when I was beginning to collect graded cards and collecting online. Learned some valuable lessons with that.

My Bossy PSA sets do not have the certification numbers whited out because I believe people cannot right click and save the images online. But that doesn't completely prevent people from taking a pic of their desktop, cutting the image out, and saving it as a file of their own. I have been thinking about going through and whiting out mine...maybe that's a good project to do this weekend. Using the "watermark" along with whiting out would be very good to do to your images.
