Seated Liberty Half & Rarity/Values 1862

OK, this is a bit out of my area of specialty but have noticed that despite the often reported hoard quantities of some of the early 1860s coming from Central America that the 1862 Philadelphia issue seems to be fairly scarce to rare. Is this the case or are there just a lot stored up and around.

They seem to be rare. This one, which grades VG-F, cost me $100 on EBay.

Please explain. Are you saying you could find a TPG-slabbed specimen in a higher grade for $250? I don't doubt you could.

I purchased the coin because it has a nice circulated cameo look to it. Though I like to collect SLHalves in VF30-XF45, I look for a certain appearance (original, preferably dark) more so than I do a particular grade. I like the coin. $100 seemed like a fair market price for the coin.

I got one not slabbed about 20 years ago and estimate EF40 on the conservative side also with nice original toning. For some reason when you see dealers with runs of circulated SLHs they just do not seem to have this coin (as opposed to the 1862 S or 1861, etc.). I notice that the catalogs have never really refllected it being scarcer so maybe nobody really cares...
