I know nothing about gold but the number that came to mind is 58. Scrolling down I see others had the same feeling. --Jerry

Or they just clicked properties and saw NGC AU-58 under the file name image
Want to buy an auction catalog for the William Hesslein Sale (December 2, 1926). Thanks to all those who have helped us obtain the others!!!

  • Wierd because the surfaces appear to be hairlined. But then, that could just be from contact marks. Appears to have 55-58 wear and has a nice color to it...

Really? I do not think he has a clue.
  • Why ask for grade opinions and then give the grade away after two guesses? image

Also, I like the rev die cracks around UNITED STATES. Grades in the AU's, but wiped like other have said.

From what I understand NGC is a bit forgiving with hairlines and /or very light cleaning on century and half old gold. But, I may wrong about that, though I think I read it on their website once.....something to that effect.

If this coin was enhanced, it was done in isolated areas and it if that was done, then the lustre would be inconsistent on the coin. Without seeing this in hand, it looks original.

I like the coin- 55 seems right, however, I could be persuaded after seeing it in hand to change my opinion

The die brake through UNITED STATES is interesting. Is that typical for this date/type?

The lighting conditions may be enhancing the appearance of the abrasions. Based on the image, the luster seems to be somewhat subdued (but again could be lighting). There is slight wear/rub on the portrait and on the upper wing and tips. I think a grade of AU55 or 58 is appropriate, and I agree that the coin has relatively few significant contact marks/hits. Overall, a nice example of this first year of issue double eagle.

Die cracks on the reverse along the peripheral lettering are very common for this issue. Also, this is the closed 5 variety.

The 1850 is always in high demand as the first year of issue, but is actually more common than many Philadelphia Type 1’s. You might be surprised to learn that PCGS has graded 729 1850 $20’s in all grades, yet only 455 1851 $20’s in all grades (1851 is considered a "common" date in the series).

I saw that you have already posted the grade, and NGC has the advantage of examining the coin in person. However, just for fun, after examining the photos that you provided earlier in this thread, I'd grade the obverse an AU-58 and the reverse an AU-53 for a net grade of AU-55.

I am sorry but I have to say it's been cleaned as well. AU58 seems to be in line with the way these are graded.

This coin crossed to PCGS as a AU 58 and I was just told today it got the CAC bean .image

I was going to say AU55 before I saw the grade. I did forget to hit the NGC calibration button on my grading machine and that could explain my 3 point deviation. image

Based on the limited wear and relatively few abrasions, I think it looks AU55-AU58.

1850 was the most abundant double eagle in the Baltimore Coin hoard with 92 coins uncovered. It is not unreasonable to think that this coin could have been among that group.

There is an excellent interview on the subject in the link below.
