So what is the oldest OBW roll of coins you have?

SanctionIISanctionII Posts: 12,260 ✭✭✭✭✭
A few years back I could have said an OBW roll of 1955D quarters. However I succombed to temptation and ripped it open.

Today the oldest I have is a 1974D roll of centsimage

How about you?

    58-D Lincolns.
The wrapper says California Bank, Head Office, Los Angeles Calif.

I have older rolls older than that but they're not OBW.

1935 lincoln cent and 1935 washington quarter obw rolls.

I am trying to complete a obw roll set of 1934 to present cents and quarters. Impossible to complete anymore but still trying.

  • 1952 cents in 1952. I thought I would start an annual tradition. Then there were no 1953's that showed up until 1954 and they were mixed with the 1954's.

I used to have a roll of 1940-P cents, but I broke it open 25-30 years ago and put them in a plastic tube. I still have OBW rolls of 1942-P cents and 1945-P quarters.

I also had a roll of 1945-P dimes, but I broke that open hoping to find a FB coin. Nothing even close to FB in the entire roll.

  • I am currently working my way through a recently acquired, very large hoard of BU Lincolns. Probably 10,000 rolls all told - I have not gotten a final count yet. Earliest OBW so far is 1955. I could not resist opening that one. Nothing. There are also about 30 OBW 1972's that I will probably open as well. Hey, you never know. Tons of shotgun wrapped from the sixties, but tons of Zinc as well. I think that the 55 and the 72's will be the only ones that I open.

I'm not going into the safe to look, but I think the definition of "OBW" is a bit suspect in my case. But . . . a roll of 1945-S Lincolns is probably the oldest. I just broke open a roll of 1938-D Jeffs that was stunning, so it is no longer OBW.

I have a OBW of 46-P of Dimes and a 49-S OBW roll of Lincolns. They are my earliest. Just picked up a few rolls of 50s dimes a few weeks ago. One was a 53-S with nice end roll toning.

I think the oldest that I ...have owned is 1940 Lincolns......but I open every roll I buy....I just can't stand it, when I buy um, I wanna see um...that's it.

I can say that of all the things I do, searching a nice OBW or Fed roll is one of the most relaxing and rewarding (whether I find "the big one or not) things that I enjoy doing......................image

I just looked back and read what I just wrote and the first thing that comes to mind is "NERD"......which I'm not, I just like it!image

That would be neat! I like to think of my roll of 1902 cents as original but they are in a plastic tube because the guy I got them from said the roll was fallling apart and coins were coming loose. If indeed an original roll of 1891 dimes existed it would really be some kind of cool! image
