Finding Unc examples are tough, too. Dimes of the day were the workhorse on the time. Kind of like the paper dollar of today. Low mintage and no dimes made in 1922 helped make 1921 a tough year for any grade AU and above. Both my 1921 and 1921-D were the toughest coins to find in my set. I searched for over three years! They are out there, it is just going to take you sometime to find. You can expect to pay a premium, too. They never seem to sell at what they catalog for, but that is just the way it goes.

I think they're old timey hoard dates, like 27-s SLQs. There's a local collector (and I live in the middle of nowhere) who had at least a thousand 27-s SLQs from G-XF about 10 years ago. He was just fixated on them. As far as I know he still has them. A dealer friend of mine (now retired) used to hoard things like 21 Mercs (although probably not AUs). It was his retirement plan.
Added: In terms of PCGS or NGC...this same dealer was a big time dipper. Said he couldn't sell Morgans that weren't blast white.

They show up once in awhile.

You think? I think they were just used extensively and weren't saved in too huge of numbers. There are an awful lot of AGs out there...
