Water Stains

So I picked up a collection of 66 Topps. There are some super nice hi's, but I noticed that about half have water stains. I've never subbed a water stain card before. In general, can someone please advise how that affects the grade? I don't have a scan, but as an example, I have a 66 Hi Skowron that is well centered, no wrinkles, decent corners, would grade a PSA 7 IMO. But there is a very light stain covering about 1/3rd of the card front that is obviously from moisture. NOTE: the is no visible warping of the card whatsover.

Would it come back with an ST qualifier? Can you request a lower grade w/o it? Thoughts?

Thanks

Water stains can be "removed" or at the very least camouflaged.

I'm not considering altering the cards. I've read some threads on this at these boards and I don't see discussion of actual anticipated grades. Can you request an NQ for this type of clearly visible stain?

I think PSA only used the ST qualifier for wax/gum stains.

Water stained cards will be net graded down.

So your otherwise PSA 7 looking card might end up in a PSA 3 slab.

    I was just wondering...

Is removing a water stain considered "altering" the card?

I know there was a great article on "soaking" cards that does no damage to them and can remove certain types of stain or marks.

You may get "altered stock" if you submit a card with a water stain. If they give it an altered stock designation that you kiss you grading fees goodbye. No vouchers for that.

I've asked the question before and there doesn't seem to be agreed upon consensus whether this falls in the "altering" category. To some, it is an accepted practice, to others it is completely unnacceptable. Definitely an interesting topic that has been discussed many times.

This card has water damage above the brim of Ron Cey's hat. The surface is actually raised, you can feel the damaged spot. I kind of expected a 2 or 3, I bought it in one of those thick lucite holders unscrupulous dealers hide damage in, and just wanted it holdered. Not sure if PSA missed it, or didn't think it was that important.

Large scans to show the damage

  • Water Stains ! That's it. I busted open a '79 Baseball wax tray. A few cards, the better ones, have bumps on them. I knew I knew what it was but couldn't recall. Water Stains. Now how they got on the cards is another story.
