1943d possible bronze cent "Update in last post"

I was just going through some old wheats cents that I found around the house today. I happen to notice a 1943d bronze in appearance cent. I weighed it on an old triple beam which really isnt that accurate but it weighed 3 grams. Its probably a coated bronze cent but is their anything I should look for to see if its the real thing. This coin is beat up badly and I dont take pictures and I looked around for a magnet, but cant find one. Any help would be appreciated.

make sure you dont use the penny to help pay for the magnet.....that would be really self defeating.

Lol... why even buy the magnet? Just stick the penny up to the magnet at the store!

Exactly what I was thinking. It'd cost more in gas to go to the store multiple times then to just buy a .99 cent magnet.

Sweet -- and a semi-key date to boot.

I've received a smattering of worn out P-mint Lincolns in the 1910s -- oldest coin I ever received in change was a 1910-P Lincoln. The oldest branch mint cent I can recall getting in change is still in my collection -- a 1942-D.

My younger daughter was a "door slammer". She carried this on as a fine art form. While she was having 'boy troubles' at age 15 or so....one day my wife and I came in and all the little magnets and slips of paper, photos etc etc were all rearranged on the fridge door. A few were still on the floor, some about five feet from the fridge.....

Without a second thought my wife yells toward my daughters tightly closed door "SO WHATS GOT YOU SO MAD NOW?"
  • Sorry folks as it turns out it is indeed a steel cent cause it does stick to a magnet, you could have fooled me by the looks of it. It looked bronze in appearance although it was quiet beat up looking. I though I might have hit the jackpot but thats how it goes for me. Mr. not lucky I should call myself.

Old DC motors, speakers, broken hard drives are good sources for magnets. The hard drive magnet is especially strong.

If you have none of those then do what I learned as a kid, make your own magnet. Find a steel nail or some other like item made of steel, some insualted copper wire and a battery. Keeping an inch or so of wire free, wrap the insulated wire around the nail starting from one end, keep it wrapped tightly and spiral it all the way to the other end of the nail or until you run out of wire (only wrap down once and do not overlap wire, there is no need to waste wire). Make sure you leave enough wire on both ends so you can strip a small amount exposing the copper. Tape one end to the positive terminal on the battery and one to the negative, which end you tape matters not.

Congratulations, you have now made your own electromagnet. As long as the battery is connected it will be magnetic. Leave it long enough and you can create a fairly permanent magnet. You can now test your penny. To check the strength of your magnet try some paper clips, staples, other nails, or whatever else you have that is steel or iron.

    *** Mandated "Don't sue me." warnings ***

    - Do not leave unattended as the wire will warm up (perhaps almost un-noticably, perhaps quite warm).
    - Do not use to strong a battery or electrical source, you could melt the wire and insulation or burn yourself or worse set something on fire (a standard AA, C, or D battery will work fine).
    - I am not responisble for anyone who does this, you do so at your own risk. I am not responsible for any errors in my instructions, if you really care enough, google it... I am sure you will find lots of projects with better instructions than mine.

*** End of Mandated "Don't sue me." warnings ***

Magnet is too weak, it needs more surface area. A stronger magnet would get it on the edge.

I was going to say what Rob said, try a speaker, just stick it on the back of the speaker. They have strong magnets.

Is it thick or thin? Thin ones are not as strong. Also the composite ones (like on the refrigerator) are not as strong.

Using one from a speaker I can pick up a 43 on edge plus another hanging on the lower edge of the first one. image

    Funny story...

There was a guy selling a supposed 1944 steel cent on ebay.
I asked if a magnet will pick it up.
He said yes but only in the flip. image

Then he adds a photo of it to the auction and you could see he had a huge magnet that was picking the flip up by the staples. It was a normal copper 1944 cent that was plated. I think it still sold!
