Baseball payrolls are all very public knowledge, while NHL, NBA, and NFL are less talked about, most likely due to salary caps. I was reading a Bucs Blog and found this article on how much teams have spent over the last 5 seasons.
($s are in millions)
1. Cowboys $566.89
2. Seahawks $552.42
3. Redskins $547.37
4. Colts $532.77
5. Vikings $526.87
6. Texans $522.23
7. Saints $518.49
8. Steelers $516.69
9. Panthers $516.09
10. Patriots $513.31
11. Raiders $513.21
12. Ravens $507.05
13. Browns $506.43
14. Cardinals $505.30
15. Lions $505.04
16. Jets $502.53
17. Rams $502.08
18. Dolphins $500.56
19. Giants $497.63
20. Eagles $495.75
21. Bears $495.57
22. Falcons $493.07
23. Bengals $491.06
24. 49ers $486.40
25. Chargers $485.46
26. Broncos $485.40
27. Bills $493.71
28. Jaguars $480.06
29. Titans $465.29

I know the Bucs don't spend much money, but I was surprised that we ranked last.

<< <i>Interestingly enough, although they have spent the most money over the past 5 years, the Cowboys are one of just 7 teams that have failed to win a playoff game since 2000. The other teams are the Cheifs, Bills, Browns, Lions, Bengals, and Texans. Not very good company for such a proud franchise. >>
I agree, that is pathetic. Just goes to show when you have an idiot running an organaztion, you're never gonna get anywhere. Granted Jerry Jones was the owner when they won the 3 sb's in 4 years but he had a coach that was running the team, it wasn't him.
Of course the sb win over the Steelers saw Switzer as the coach but a well trained chimp could have coached that team to a championship that year.

Shaun Alexander's franchise tag? Im actually surprised the Hawks ranked that high, I would have expected to be middle of the pack to be honest
God i love having Paul Allen as an owner, guy has deep deep pockets. He owns the Portland trail Blazers too, but the Hawks are his baby
Edited to add: Great thread Goot, you got a haircut yet?

Nope! I thought you guys gave up on that a while ago???
However, how much each team has "spent" is only half of the picture.
The other half is how much each team has "made" over the past five years. I would like to see the numbers on team revenue. I bet the revenue made by each team exceeds the money each has spent, leaving each team with a hefty profit. Of course, with slick accounting and managment, if the team wants to show a loss or a breakeven, it probably can and does do so.
(One can also ask how much the league itself (as oposed to the individual teams) has spent and made over the past five years).
The business side of the NFL is probably just as intense as the football played on the field.

Isn't that the entire point of owning a pro sports franchise? It wasn't as focused on before, but professional sports have always been extremely business related. Look at the Black Sox Scandal for example. While they didn't go about it in the best of ways, they used sports to make money. You can even go back to Malamud's "The Natural" and find a greedy old owner, who only cares about making money and having power of the team. The only major difference in todays sports world is the ridiculous amount of money going into sports, which creates so many other opportunities for people to profit off them as well.
Here's a small glimpse at the type of revenue and finances going into teams. LINK
