Is this a counterfeit slab on Ebay

I was looking at Bust dollars and this slab just doesn't have the "look." In fact, the coin is shown without a slab, also.
What say you?

  • Thats a BCW holder with a NCS tag.

Look at the opening in the slab's insert. When did NCS start hand cutting the holes? image

Oh...and when did NCS change their shell to an after-market snap-together shell? image

At least the label appears that it could be legitimate...perhaps "borrowed" from the real slab?

No need to even discuss the origin of the coin...

Edited to add...perhaps the coin is real...see CaptHenway below...but it sure looks awful!

    Fut The Wuk!
FWIW, it is a BB-160, but that chewed-up insert looks bogus as heck!!!

  • The seller is using the same do-it-yourself slab for the 1877 Trade Dollar. Notice how he/she uses the "consignor" and "friend" as cover. A fictional person to blame when caught.

edited to add: We can disregard that now. He seems legit since 1998 & no negative feedback. Although, the consignor and selling it for a friend thing are common ebay scammer stories.

Thanks, Tom. Bust dollars are not usually on my radar.

BTW...I really like "Fut the Wuk!" image

The coin is real. The insert is genuine. I read it as a coin
placed in a snaplock type slab/holder with the insert included.

That is actually a decent price and although in today's climate
it is wise to be careful, deals can be found.

  • My guess is that he cracked it out of its original slab and when he decided to sell it on ebay he chose not to resubmit. But, what a crazy thing to do. He is just asking for trouble from Ebay, the buyer and NGC.

    How about "Whiskey Tango Foxtrot?"
  • To his credit, the seller has now removed the coin from the NCS slab and has stated it is no longer an NCS slabbed coin.

edited to add: Oops, I mean he removed it from the snap together slab with the NCS label.

  • It may sound crazy but people do store coins in holders that are not made by PCGS, NGC, ANACS, DGS.....................

I'm one of them, I like the protection it offers, the plastic scratches not the coin, and they don't cost as much. image

  • Do you stick cracked out inserts into them and list them on ebay as the real thing? Because that is the only thing people are bothered about here.
  • I store in coinworld slabs all the time- I make little written descriptions for some of them- I have a 1909 VDB with a planchet split at 12:00 and I have it duly noted on the slab... In my own chicken scratch- Not for e-bay or to attempt to fool anyone- But for my own cataloguing
  • Seller just sent me this email:

number one..."I" DIDNT PLACE ANYTHING IN A DIFFERANT HOLDER....PERIOD. I am thinking of turning all these emails and comments on that forum over to my attorney for SLANDER. I have enough comments and forum names to have a good case here.
  • That's a laugh. He should be thanking us. He was selling that as an NCS slabbed coin, whether he personally did anything with it or not.
