Have you ever collected a player because he was a nice guy?

I was wondering. I have collected a few local players because when I met them they were really nice to me, nice enough to carry on a conversation and such. These guys never amounted to much but it's fun to root for a good guy.

Brooks Robinson actually. He seems like a great guy , did meet him at a show back in 1990ish.

Enos Slaughter was another cool dude. We talked for a while outside the show.

John Lackey was that rare person who actually stopped to converse, pose for a photo and spend some time with us in a parking lot at Spring Training several years ago, so my son has a few items in his collection and i consider John one of the coolest ballplayers on the planet. image

Yes, Toby Hall as he was nice to my daughter during his stint in the Arizona Fall League.

Actually, I prefer to collect nice guys. I find it easier to root for a nice guy, especially if they have been nice to me. Because of interactions I've had with them, I now collect Adam Vinatieri, Dwight Evans, Carl Willey and Jonathan Papelbon.

    Looking for Carl Willey items.

Not because he was a nice guy...but Mike Bossy was great when I met him.

I do collect Bobby Hull and Maurice Richard too, because they were so nice when I met them.

...eventually I will collect Mantle, some say he was "so so" but I thought he was a pretty nice guy image

Part of the reason I've always collected Frank Thomas and always wanted to collect Roberto Clemente as a kid is because they are/were always charitable, fan-friendly, and all around nice guys. As a child, honor, morality, and ethics were extremely important to me; I saw those as being highlights of both men.

Since I lost so much money collecting quantities of "not nice"
guys, I now only buy "nice guys'" - or dead guys' - cards.

  • When I was a teen, I collected Ron Gant cards after meeting him at a card show. Signed 3 rookies for me even though he was only supposed to sign one per person. Then posed for pics with me and some buddies and even took the time to talk a little baseball.

Yep --- Gary Carter --- was the first to personalize an auto request back in the 80's added Good Luck and God Bless. Being a kid it felt that he took the time to read my letter and respond the way he did just for me. Flash forward 20 years and when I met him for the first time he was everything I hoped he would be and more.

Andre Dawson. He stayed after a card show and took a picture with me. Hope he gets in the HOF next year.

Bob Feller and Lew Burdette - they chatted with me for over an hour at a signing that I was the only one there for an autograph to show up. Bob Feller also rocked my infant daughter to sleep and sung her a lullabye. Class acts in my book and I am holding out hope that Bob Feller lives to be 100!

I always keep an eye out for Ashburn, Early Wynn, and Warren Spahn stuff. I met all these guys just before they died, and though I was pretty young when meeting them, I could tell they were stand-up guys.
I have never met him, but I hear Shane Victorino is a real fan-friendly guy. And though he wasn't a player, Harry Kalas was an amazingly fun guy to meet.

I have heard from reports that Craig "Ironhead" Heyward was not a likeable guy, but I met him at a card show and he couldn't be nicer. He told my four year old son jokes (clean ones image) and gave him a dollar for doing push ups. I have always collected his stuff on the side because of how nice he was.

I'll have to second the Bob Feller mention. IMO you'll never meet a nicer guy. He truly loves the game and his fans.

Another nice guy I like to collect is Kurt Warner.

I spent some time with him, talking baseball, before a show. I thought the same thing. After reading a lot more about him I got rid of his cards.

edit: after rereading what I typed, it didn't come off as being very respectful of the previous poster's collection. My apologies.
