Went to an estate auction today....

...that had advertised "1970 Topps Baseball Cards" as one of the items in the newspaper that would be auctioned off. I figured why not, so I got there this AM real early and found the 1970 Topps were actually 1978 and were in EX condition at best...all TWENTY ONE of them. Since they had coins as well and a cigar box of about 125 unopened packs of 92-93 Tony's Pizza basketball cards, I stayed to see if I could snag any of them.

I got the Tony's pizza packs for about a dime each. The 21 1978 beat up commons sold for $17.50...YES, you read that right...seventeen freakin dollars for 21 beat up 1978 commons. The coins which you could buy on ebay for a combined total of around $125 went for over a thousand dollars..YES, One Thousand dollars for $125 in coins.

Just goes to show, if you wait long enough, even if you ask ridiculous prices, someone WILL pay it.

Sorry to hear that. Not to sound like a cheap salesman but if you want '70 baseball I have hundreds and hundreds of them although most of them are EX or worse. PM if interested.

I don't think I've ever been to an estate sale Danny.

I have heard of people doing really well at them - guess it can be a crap-shoot.

Thanx for sharing - even if ya didn't get what you went for.

Do any of those Tony's Pizza packs have a Shaq on top? If you have one like that and want to sell it, drop me a pm.

I didn't know these ridiculous prices still happened. I remember going to my grandma's estate sale in 2001 and the same type of prices happened. Junk cards going for their peak prices or even higher.

Estate sales are hit and miss. I do scan local estate sales and I haven't seen sportscards in a long time.

    Thanks for sharing the story.

I have picked up some interesting sports collectibles cheaply at estate auctions - pennants, logo footballs, etc. Toward the end of the sale, when they are auctioning cartons of miscellaneous items off for whatever they can get, is when some amazing deals can be found.
My funniest profitable purchase was $1 for a box full of stuff that had $3.18 in change inside it.

It is incredible sometimes what items go for in these auctions. It wasn't an estate sale, but it was a bankruptcy sale from a commercial electronics business and they had a used office machine in good condition that I wanted that I thought perhaps I could buy cheap. The dam thing wound up selling for MORE than the list price brand new. I'm not sure if the auctioneer or their shills in the crowd, shilled it up or not which is always possible.

my brother does estate sales every weekend in Phoenix (not auctions). He could make a nice living on the stuff he picks up at them (mostly camera items) on Ebay. He'll pick up an old camera for 10 bucks or so, split it all up into seperate items - lenses, manual, camera, case, etc and turn it into 100 bucks. Seen him do it over and over. Wish I could find a nice little niche like that

For a guy who hates basketball so much, you sure spent a ton of money on those Tony's packs.

If you read the disclaimer on all anti-NBA posts, I dont dislike basketball, I dislike the no skill thugball that is played now.

Pre Iverson, pre LeBron, pre-Kobe...basketball was great, now it has turned into variation of the WWF with all the nonsense.

But you missed that part in the posts I guess

Edited to add: Im also not against taking advantage and making a little money off the people who do like thugball. I definitely would buy a LeBron rookie if I thought I could sell it for more....I just think its painful to watch it anymore
