We might move to Lexington--how do I get my 80,000 cards there safely?

Me and wife are considering moving to Lexington, Kentucky (where I went to school at if you recall; try to guess where image ). Now granted, there's a LOT of things to consider and plan for, but the biggest one is how to safely move my 80,000 card collection to there. All of it except the key cards are in binder/pages, and my main concern is the top page going up and around the rings of the binder and making a dent in the first three left side cards (if you can get what I mean by that). And we have at or close to 100 of those binders. So if anyone here has had to move, tell me, how did you get your cards there without getting any damaged?

I just received a 1979 Topps set in the binder. They fit in to the Post Office Large Priority Mail Flat Rate Boxes perfectly. Just put some bubble wrap between the first page and the binder cover. Then put packing peanuts on top.

It worked great for me. I'd pick up a couple boxes and check it out, and see if you like.

  • I'd maybe suggest getting apple boxes and put them in on edge rather than laying the binders on top of each other.

I have moved across the country, then to Texas, and back to California, and here's what I did each time:

go to Staples and buy a bunch of Bankers Boxes. They're not cheap, but you will love them!

After you assemble them at home, you will think that those boxes were designed to fit card albums! You will be able to fit 5 albums in each box. And as a bonus, you can keep them stored that way in your card room. The boxes are sturdy, but I would still pack them tightly with peanuts or plastic wrap, just in case.

PS...I notice that you need a Sutter 7. I have a pretty low-priced one for sale at 320388501742 if you'd like!

When I moved - which was often being in the military - I put all my stuff in those plastic cases with flaps that ya get at Walmart/Target/Office Depot.

Since movers got to see them - they were sealed with tape and marked as books/magazines.

I didn't have any in binders - but I would consider taking them out of the binders and stacking the sheets separately, if you're really worried.

Good luck - have a safe trip!

    Estil,

When I'm transporting binders, I place a sheet of cardboard behind the pages, on top of the pages, and between every 20 sheets or so.

What this does is limit the amount of pressure and stress at the rings and keeps creases from forming on the leftmost cards.

    Hope that makes sense.
