Stunning card, but at the price it will no doubt hammer at, i might wait for one with a clean back.

I'd rather have a centered 7with a clean back too.

  • So, 2 people on this board I respect greatly have chimed in and the Dont's have it..

    I will wait for a good 7.

Seeing what you saw how is it that PSA gave that an 8, if it appears to be on the back?

A lot more wax there than on the 59 Mantle I posted about that got the ST qualifier, but hard to avoid on that issue. Still a beautiful card, but it is going to go for beaucoup dollars. 59 ST link

Felicia, I agree with all three of you. How does that get the grade it did with that "stain" on the back? I know if I sent in that card it would not have come back as an "8".
    STAY HEALTHY!

Liquidating my collection for the 3rd and final time. Time for others to enjoy what I have enjoyed over the last several decades. Money could be put to better use.
  • I think the card is fairly graded for the issue. The front is amazing (one of the better examples that I have seen). It doesn't have the usual printing flaws on the front. Wax stains on the back of 1951 Bowman are common. I thought 1951 Bowman was only issued in penny packs and those are prone to wax stains?

With that said, I would continue looking for a nice 7/8 without the wax stain. It took me a long time to find one without the printing flaws on the front and no wax stain. It seemed like most cards had issues with the front or back.

    Hi Felicia,

Goodwin sold this stainless '51 Mantle PSA 7 in November of last year for just a tad over $11,000 which included a buyer's premium.

I'm sure you can find one just as nice or better. There should be a nice array of them at the National next month.

Good luck and I hope you find a really nice one soon image

That's a really old flip. It would be given a 7 today, no question in my mind. Definitely hold out for better.

May have came out of a penny pack.

PSA is very easy on these early Bowmans with regards to wax stains.

    Steve
    Good for you.
  • I also agree. That 7 is great. It has much nicer eye appeal then the 8. In addition, after looking at the 8 again, the top left corner (from the back scan) on the 8 looks odd.
  • Poppa,

I have to agree I really like that 7 over the 8. Thats why the card sold for a premium, The ol addage buy the card not the holder sure applies with that 7.

I hope I can find one like that, it is a stunning card for the grade.

I will keep looking, I got outbid on the 8 this am at 9K and I am not going to bid anymore..

    Ill let it go.

    And search on...

Thanks for all your help guys, and david if you need to sell your 51 Bowman PSA 7 Mantle let me know...image

The same Mantle in a 7 is the way I would go also. or a 8 with a better back.

PSA has always let early Bowmans slide with back wax stains.

Those cards were sold in 1 cent packs (1 card per pack) and every one of those has the stain.

They also sold 6 card packs for a nickel.

    Good for you.
