Another OT but baseball related - LL All Star Update

As much as I brag on here about my son's Little League performances, thought I should also mention tonights game.

Second game of the city All Star tourney. In winners bracket after 10-0 win last night. Tonight we won 9-6, but.......

My boy came in to pitch with the game tied 4-4 and the bases loaded with 2 outs. Three pitches, three strikes. Inning over. We score 2 in our half of the inning. My son pitches the next inning. First pitch, pop up, one out. Second batter fouls off about 10 pitches. Finally he swings and misses. Two outs. Then the wheels fell off. Next batter never swings. Four close pitches all called balls. Next kid pops up. Inning should be over. Third baseman drops the ball. My son is mad now. He has a horrible temper and is very competitive and I do not know how to balance the two. He throws as hard as he possibly can (he is only 10 but tops out around 55) on the next pitch and plunks this poor fat kid right in the rib cage. Kid comes out of the game but the bases are now loaded. Wild pitch, run scores. Has the batter down 1 ball 2 strikes, kid hits a dribbler back to the mound. My son scoops the ball barehanded, throws to first. First baseman drops the ball but a run somehow doesn't score.

My son is steaming mad now. I had to tell the coach that it would be best for the team if we pulled him. image

Not only could he not close out the game, but he was PO'd and had to sit and watch fromn the bench as his team rallied for the victory.

  • Sounds like your son did just fine to me, just a few bumps in the road. The temper thing is hard to control at that age. I love the description of the fat kid, there's always one on a all-star team because they hit homeruns at that age. As far as a learning experience do you think he learned more by staying in the game or did it just tick him off more? Sometimes those things will help when the same thing comes around in another game. Nice story, I hope he had a little fun.

Bill, it's great that you're so active in your sons life and that you can recount events from his games like that. I know there are a lot of kids out there that would have liked their dads there at all their games...yeah, kind of sappy, but needed to be mentioned.

He'll get over the temper thing eventually. Kids at that age are hyper-competitive, especially if they're one of the best players on the team.

I remember 20 years ago when I was in Little League, I used to throw pretty hard for my age but kids eventually caught up and I was done soon after little league...but it always PO'd me when the other team would be late on a pitch and hit the ball to our inept right fielder (isn't it ALWAYS the RF in little league?!!) who couldn't handle a grounder, much less a pop fly. You get over it by the next game.
