OT - Jewerly

ajaanajaan Posts: 17,618 ✭✭✭✭✭
As some of you may know, my brother's girlfriend died last Thanksgiving at the age of 44. My brother has some of her jewerly he wants to sell and the money will be donated to the school system they both work(ed) for.

Anyone have any suggestions where to sell jewerly? The main item is a platinum and diamond ring but there is also some gold items. Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

If you suspect the jewelry will sell for more than scrap, eBay it.

If you think it's average stuff not necessarily worthy of a premium over its metal value, try Midwest Refineries . They've pretty much been the refiner of choice for the US metal detecting community for many years. The site looks a little silly, but they're known for honesty and fast payment. A much, much better choice than a local pawn shop or a fly by nite cash for gold operation.

Take it around to 3 or more local jewerly stores and have them quote you prices. Sometimes they will pay you melt for the metal, but won't by the stones. Other times, if the design and craftsmanship is good, they will buy the piece outright.

You'll get skinned alive selling jewelry. Just a suggestion: Donate the jewelry 'as is' to the school and let them worry about selling it and claim retail value for charitable contribution tax deduction. The school can then have a charity auction which may bring higher value specially if the jewelry have appraisal papers.
