Who/what determines weight in set composition?

Just looked at the card weight in the set composition of my 83 Donruss set. Sandberg rookie typically outsells the Gwynn and has a higher VCP/SMR PSA 10 average. Sandberg is given a weight of 6 but Gwynn has a weight of 10. The only ones with a weight over 1 are Rose, Ripken and Ryan. Ripken always outsells the Boggs rookie. Think I actually paid more for my San Diego Chicken PSA 10 card than I did the Boggs.

Who/what decides the weight in the registry?

    Thats a great question.

My only set registry experience is with the 86 Fleer bask set. I've always found it weird/annoying that none of the super tough commons in that set are weighted any more than a regular common.

I get the fact that MJ is far more heavily weighted than anyone else. Because in any condition, that card will outsell any other card in the set.

But other star cards like Akeem, Ewing, Magic etc will always be outsold by guys like Maurice Lucas, Rolando Blackman and Steve Johnson, yet the star cards are weighted much higher.

... "What are weights? Within a set, not all cards and tickets have the same value. Sets in the PSA Set Registry are weighted on a 1 to 10 scale with 10 being the rarest item and 1 being the most common. While it may be in true in some instances that an item may be many times over 10 as rare as the most common item in the set, the Registry keeps the scale simple so that all levels of collectors can compete. Each item within the set is assigned a weight based on the value of the item in NM-MT condition.

How is the GPA calculated? The Weighted Grade Point Average is the grade of each item registered in the set multiplied by the weight and then summed. That sum is divided by the total number of registered card weights.

How is the Set Rating calculated? The Set Rating is achieved by dividing the weighted grade sum by the total sum of the weights in the entire set.

How are bonus points and deductions calculated? The calculation for bonuses or deductions is as follows:

    (Grade + Bonus) x Weight
    (Grade - Deduction) x Weight

There are a few sets that have extremely rare cards as optional. In those sets, the card may receive a bonus point which is added to the total GPA. ...."

Many of the weights in the Mantle Master Registry Set have recently been adjusted; but it seems like there are still quite a few that are out of touch! .... For example, the 1956 YELLOW BASEPATH MICKEY MANTLE PM15 PINS and the 1956 TOPPS YANKEES TEAM CARD are both weighted a 2.5!

  • When I had them set up the 1941 Goudey set registry they asked me what the weighting should be. Now that I want to change it though I wonder if they will be so kind.

  • PSA 8 SMR price makes sense. So, I looked at the SMR for the example I gave (83 Donruss). Like I said, Sandberg is $10 more than Gwynn in PSA 10 and Ripken is $5 more than Boggs. Why is Gwynn priced higher than Sandberg and Boggs higher than Ripken in PSA 8?

In the "old" set registry format, when a card was not part of the composite, there was an option for you to put the "suggested" weight you thought the card should be. They sometimes went with your suggestion and other times they did not.

Boggs is higher then Ripken cuz it is a rookie card for Boggs?

I mis read your sentence thus I edited out my comment.

    Good for you.

    Cliff Notes version:

If one card is valued higher in PSA 10 than another card, why is the same card lower in PSA 8 than the same other card?

A few years ago I inquired about set weighting for the 70 and 71 Topps Super Baseball. No weights were assigned at the time. So, PSA emailed a spread sheet, and I filled in the weights. Used the 69 Topps Super as a guide. They didn't change anything. I believe you can still make suggestions for set weights. Just shoot them an email.
