should I be annoyed by this??

I sold a few cards to a guy.. a good size sale.. and as a thank you I through in a psa 7 roger maris card
I made no mention of it in the package.. just included it..
anyway I just stumbled across it today on ebay.. I guess as a gift he can do with it what he likes but
I won't do that again. I will give it away here next time..

    Oak,

I wouldn't get annoyed by that. When you throw in the extra card it's like giving the guy a discount. HOWEVER, if you gave it away for free to someone without them buying any cards from you THEN I'd be pissed if it was for sale right away! JMO.

Nice gesture -- but what can you do? You still got the big sale.

I wouldn't be bothered if he said "thank you" for the card.

As you said, it's a gift and he can do whatever he pleases with it.

he didn't say thank you.. but that didn't get me so much
I wish he would have given it a little more time to be less obvious
and not race to the computer.

alright guys thanks.. I won't let it get to me.. and I will treat it like you said..
    like it is a discount

I wouldn't get upset, but the better question is...

Why did you do a search for the card on eBay? Were you hoping the guy sold it?
  • OAKESY25OAKESY25 Posts: 4,726 ✭✭✭
I was looking for the same cards from the set

He took his "free miles" and turned them into "cashback", nothing wrong with that.

I once bought a complete 1954 baseball set, and there were
1956 Topps baseball checklists at the end of the album.

I wasn't sure if he threw them in, or they were added by error.
I was afraid to say anything, thinking the seller would want them back.
Perhaps your buyer thought you made a mistake. Did you add..."Here's a free card for your order"?

It would be different if he had said something like, "I'd love to buy your Maris card, but don't have the money right now." Then you throw it in for free, and then he sells it.

Right. But see, it's different if you get a gift from a friend than if you get a gift as part of a sale. That's how I view it. No matter what, though, I wouldn't be PO'ed either way. #1, they may not need the item, #2, they may need the money.

On another note, congratulations on the Tigers winning the CWS.

Wow, that was a very cool thing to do! I felt grateful when I got 3 1983 Donruss cards thrown into a purchase I made.

NO.. I made no mention of the free card.. just included it..
if he did think I made a mistake and this is the route he took
it makes the whole situation way worse... I hope people are better then that
but I think we know they aren't.. I will just say it is his to do with what he wanted..
and he knows it is not a mistake.. and I hoped it would be part of his collection
next time I will choose someone who it would mean more to then a couple bucks.

    Hi Bob,

You are to be commended for your thoughtful gesture!

Two years ago, almost to this day, I gave my 1996 Chrysler Sebring Convertible to a friend-in-need. The Sebring was in great shape with only 52,000 miles on it. My friend had just lost his job and couldn't make his payments on his car, so he had to give it up.

I originally intended to use the Sebring as a trade-in for my current car, but my buddy, that owns the car dealership from which I purchased my new car, told me he'd take care of me without the Sebring trade-in.

So, out of the goodness of my heart, I decided to give my friend-in-need the Sebring. He was so excited and couldn't stop thanking me enough ... so he said.

It turns out that he sold the car a week later and bought a plasma TV with the money.

I about crapped my pants .... but, I never said a word to him about it to this day! (about the car ... not me almost crapping my pants image)

I guess the point I'm trying to make, is that we live and learn, but we should never regret our good deeds.

I don't regret helping him out and if I had to do it all over again .... I most likely would.

Once you gave it to him as a throw in he is allowed to do with it as he chooses.

No need to be annoyed. I'd give a reason why he is doing this but it would be supposition.

    Good for you.

    steve,

I am not annoyed.. I let it go.. my posts on this topic now are just to answer the questions posed by other board members
I couldn't be better.. I sometimes knee jerk react to things and was hurt.. but I get over stuff pretty quick

I am grateful for the sale

    POPPA .. THAT SUCKS!

If he sold it because he needed money to pay monthly bills, that's one thing. But to go out and buy a PLASMA with the money ... geeze!

I would not care that the guy re-sold the card but I would be pissed he didn't say thank you. Then there is an element of him thinking you sent it by accident and he's getting over. I don't like that. However, as stated above you made a nice gesture and those things generally come around to help you in life!

    You should be upset.

Let me tell you my experience with gifts here on the Collector's Universe Forum. A few months ago I saw a post where a member pulled a card from a pack that I was trying to upgrade in my Mike Bossy master set. I messaged him, offering money for the card. He replied that he had already given the card to another member and gave me his name to see if he would be interested in selling the card. I contacted that member and offered the money. He said that he would feel strange selling a card that was a gift. After a few messages back and forth, we worked out a trade instead.

Since then the member I originally messaged has sent me pack fresh cards of Mike Bossy. I will never sell these cards. The other member has turned out to become a good friend, we send gifts back and forth, check up from time to time, and talk about hockey (as there are not many of us hockey guys here!)

There was a thread a saw a few weeks ago where a guy made a poster out of basketball cards that were given to him by a board member. I don't think I would have done that to cards that were a gift, but the poster did look nice.

From time to time I send an extra graded card in on my eBay auctions if I know the buyer. Generally I do this with people I believe will keep the card (example, for their PSA sets) but if they sold them then that is okay too (usually this happens when they upgrade the card)

I would be sort of upset in your situation with the Maris...but not mad.
