Picked up a 1976 autographed Walter Payton rookie card (maybe picked it up :) )
I saw this listing on ebay last night:
Walter Payton autographed rookie card
I immediately requested a PSA/DNA quick opinion, and 10 minutes later, it came back as "Likely Genuine". Seller has low feedback but 100%, however only a rating of 35 over 5 years. I quickly check feedback and see that their selling feedback is all over 90 days, but they do have some buying activity recently. Old football media guides, so I hope they are just a football collector in need of a little cash. I check to make sure auciton is covered by paypal buyer protection and it is for full amount so I executed buy it now and paid immediately.
This morning, seller emails me with this:
"Hello,
Thank you for the purchase, you will not be disappointed. There is a small problem, however. Apparently, because I have only been involved in 35 eBay transactions (100%), the payment you sent is being held until you submit feedback. I do not feel that comfortable sending the card without having the payment. Long story short, can you submit feedback now? I know it's odd, and I understand if you do not want to. The transaction may just take longer if not done, because I would have to wait to ship it. Either way, you will receive your item. Thanks again."
He (or she, who knows) also provided their contact info. I called him immediately and told him that would not be acceptable, that I wouldn't leave feedback until received and I was happy with it, and explained to him that the system is in place to protect the buyer, and that he was protected as well since paypal was holding his funds in "escrow" kind of. He said he understood that now and would ship out today.
I guess I'll just have to wait and see if I get it or not. I sure would like to have it, but I feel protected by paypal anyway in case things go awry. I'm flying out to LA on Wednesday, but hopefully when I return Saturday night, it will be waiting for me. I did tell him that if he Expressed Mailed it today and I got it tomorrow, that I would have his funds released BEFORE I left for my trip. That seemed to go over pretty well, so I might get it Expressed Mailed tomorrow.
I'm not adding this to my HOF signed rookie card thread yet, until it's in my hands safely. Most of them, I add immediately upon purchase, but this one has me feeling some doubts.
Sorry for the rambling thread, just wanted to put this out there. Could be fun to see who thinks I'll actually receive it, and who thinks i won't.
Here's the Payton by the way (nice card at a very reasonable price if I get it!)

I have met walter payton when I was in chicago I worked for United Airlines, his office was in the building where we were.
I saw him at the cafeteria all the time but never had the nerve to go up to him.
One day I finally did and he was as nice as could be. I told him I was sorry to bother him but I was a huge fan and he was my favorite player of all time and could I bother him for an autograph.
He took the menu (A paper mat) and turned it over and signed it for me.
I saw him almost once a week and he always said " Good morning Felicia" or "How are you doing Felicia". I was amazed he remembered my name, we stopped and had small talk on more than
one occasion.
Of all the autos you have, I can assure you this is one of the ones you should cherish, god took him from us way to early and he truly was a great human being.
Just thought Id share..
If you want me to scan and show you his auto mike I will do so....

Hi Felicia,
Sure, I'd love to see your Payton. Sounds like he was a courteous person.

Liquidating my collection for the 3rd and final time. Time for others to enjoy what I have enjoyed over the last several decades. Money could be put to better use.
I would hold off for a "better" signature personally. The positioning on that one is really distracting to me and the signature isn't as clear as many examples. Payton, fortunately, signed a ton before he was taken from us all.
I have a number of Payton autos with this one being my favorite for some reason.
Snorto~
I sold you that ball on Ebay right!
