Negro League Project: Any thoughts?

This past Saturday I was attending the Padres v. Athletics game at Petco (my lady friend is a Huge A's fan -- especially Stairs), and there was a tribute to the Negro League. Don Newcombe, who brushed elbows with me at Anaheim in 2006, was in attendence and he received a huge ovation. My goodness, he is a big man with a very commanding presence. That said, it got me thinking about a potential card project involving Negro Leauge players who went on to the big leagues, and even those who did not. I'd only be interested in BB cards, regardless of the manufacturer, although I don't have much knowledge with regards to the pre-Topps era niche sets. I'd like to include some regular-issue Topps and Bowman cards in the project, particularly the '53 Topps Paige, though many other possibilities exist.

I'd love to hear your ideas.

Well -- the reality is that the vast majority of Negro League Stars do not have contemporaneous cards...

I am actively buying MIKE SCHMIDT gem mint baseball cards. Also looking for any 19th century cabinets of Philadephia Nationals. Please PM with additional details.

Perhaps some Cuban League Issues? Surprisingly not as expensive as you'd think. Although the Tolesteros (sp?) Gibson will set you back $10K if you can find one.

Also, maybe it would be cool to collect first or second generation photos??
Kiss me once, shame on you.

many have what they call tribute cards so you might have to use some of them.

good luck! sounds like a great type set.

I don't know for sure but I think the Gibson will be quite a bit more than $10,000. Again, I don't know this for sure but I have it in my mind that a low grade version is around $30,000. It's probably immaterial but does someone have VCP that could see? This card has always peaked my interest but I haven't followed the price of it because I will never be able to afford it. image

Edited to add that it's a great idea for a project! Please keep us posted!
