Good coin stores in central Orange county, Ca. ?

LanLordLanLord Posts: 11,724 ✭✭✭✭✭
I'll be in the Tustin, Orange, Anaheim area in about a week or so, I have a little time on friday to do some looking around and wondering if there are any good recommendations for "should not miss this" coin stores in the OC?

Thanks.

Huntington Beach Coin Exchange is the best I've found in OC. Only the best thing about the place is their bid board and you'll need to come back on a saturday afternoon to see if you won and pick up your coins. If you aren't going to still be there on saturday it might not work, not sure if they ship it if you aren't able to come back.

Liberty Coin Gallery is a bigger store with a nice selection of just about everything, only it is not in OC, rather it is in LA County in the Signal Hill/Long Beach area. It is worth the drive though.
  • I might be wrong, but isn't Tulving's in Orange County?

might want to check the dealer boards for the areas you're going to be in- but remember- 405/5/22/57 FWY's are a night mare on Friday's - from noon on- everyone heading to Big Bear to a party I heard about sponsored by a forum member A039 or sumthin like that.

  • Orange County, California...home of Kobe Bryant (LA Lakers), Disneyland, and ground zero for the subprime mortgage meltdown.

Since the advent of the internet, most brick & mortar coin stores here have gone the way of the dodo bird, but there are still a few that remain. Some are jewelry stores too, some are pawn shops.

I cannot highly recommend any, but your best bets would be these two:

    Bob Patchin's Coin Gallery Inc

    (714) 639-6202

    346 S Tustin St
    Orange, CA 92866

Owner is knowledgeable, inventory is hit or miss. Might want to call first if you are looking for anything in particular.

    Huntington Beach Coin Exchange

    (714) 963-0038

    10122 Adams Ave
    Huntington Beach, CA 92646

Owner is knowledgeable, goes to many shows, including Long Beach, have an auction board where collectors post their coins for sale. Again, hit or miss.

A few others that may be of interest:

    Irvine Gold Mine

    (949) 857-5250

    14370 Culver Dr Ste E
    Irvine, CA 92604

This is more of a jewelry store first, coins are secondary. Call first to see what they have.

    MONEX International

    (949) 752-1400

    Monaco Financial

    (949) 752-1933

    4910 Birch St
    Newport Beach, CA 92660

These two operate out of the same location. I think this is by appointment only. Can be an interesting side trip, but keep hold of your wallet. I went there and got to see a bunch of shipwreck gold...a real treat. Had some high end stuff at the time.

    London Coin Galleries-Newport

    (949) 251-1366

    4533 Macarthur Blvd
    Newport Beach, CA 92660

This is real close to the airport. It is also a pawn shop, so you never know what you might find there. Also has ancient coins and stuff like fossils and dinosaur bones. Interesting.

    Professional Coin Grading Svc

    (949) 833-0600

    1921 E Alton Ave
    Santa Ana, CA 92705

Never heard of 'um. image I don't think they are open to the public, except certain days to drop off coins for grading.

    Lawrence Numismatics

    (949) 640-2304

    567 San Nicolas Dr
    Newport Beach, CA 92660

    Not familiar with this one.

    Teletrade Inc

    (949) 250-4490

    18061 Fitch
    Irvine, CA 92614

Teletrade and Bowers & Merena share space here. If there is an auction going, you can go here to view the lots. Great fun!

    Spectrum Numismatics Inc

    (949) 955-1250

    18022 Cowan Ste 105
    Irvine, CA 92614

Not sure of this one. May be by appointment only. Call first.

    Marc One Numismatics Inc

    (714) 258-0954

    15032 Red Hill Ave
    Tustin, CA 92780

Not sure of this one. May be by appointment only. Call first.

    S L Contursi Incorporated

    (949) 376-1158

    867 N Coast Hwy
    Laguna Beach, CA 92651

Kind of far from where you are going, but may be worthwhile. Call first.

    Enjoy your trip!

Out of those places named only the Irvine Gold Mine, Huntington Coin Exchange and London Coin Galleries are open to the public. Collectors Universe/ PCGS, Monaco Financial, RCW/ Steve Contursi, Marc Crane/ Marc One and the Spectrum companies are not open to the public.

Although I am not totally sure I do not believe Kobe Bryant lives in Orange County. As for the subprime mortgage meltdown, there are numerous locales around California that are candidates for meltdown hub consideration, but Orange County really isn't one of them. Although the inland areas of the county have taken a hit, the coastal areas are actually holding their values and places like Newport Beach, Laguna Beach and Dana Point are still in strong demand. Anybody who thinks they can find a decent home in Newport Beach for only $300,000 they're in for a rude awakening.
