GIES: WWI Cast Art Medal

I have been very fortunate to pick up three additional Gies WWI art medals over the past six weeks. This is unheard of regarding Gies material and especially the early stuff. I think the economy is mostly responsible for these appearing since the sellers were pretty bummed out that something had to leave their collections. I promised that I would give them a good and loving home.

The spears seem disproportionately large compared to the soldiers and I wonder if that might be a key to the meaning of the medal.
