Anyone know if there are any price changes in new Krause?

The 2010 20th century edition?

I've been so disappointed with the pricing there seems little point in updating.

I have it on good authority that the pre-decimal Brit coin prices for 20th C. show changes, although this has not been the problem that many of the other countries have been. CK, why don' t you see if you might lend them a hand??

I just opened up my of 1995 Krause and noticed that many of the prices for Union of South Africa (1923-1960) coinage were the same then as they were in the 2009 catalogue. Even a cursory glance at ebay auctions concerning these pieces reveals that the Krause prices are woefully low.

I've gotten so far out of the loop over the past six or seven years that I'm
nearly as bad as they are. I see coins advertised on the web for hundreds
of dollars that Krause list for 2 in BU so there's little question they need a
lot of work. They don't seem to care much about the accuracy of the prices
and this goes double for the moderns.

Ck, I think that they do have prices that nee "fixin'" and I think they are amenable to assistance if the source and documentation are decent. It would take a lot of work to winnow down a number of sources and then try to average out what such coins may bring on average and not necessarily in the home country.

I mean, what is a coin worth mutually to a buyer and seller in Podunk, Iowa? That price in the general case you cite may be only $2 as opposed to the 200 it might fetch in Lithuania. Stellar coins offered in competitive world class actions may bring many multiples of catalog on the other hand.

this probably is part of the problem; exceedingly low demand. There many not be
two collectors in this country who want something like modern French or an Irish
1983 50P. A lot of novice collectors would love to have such coins for a dollar or
two but there's no demand at market price. By the ame token though perhaps
they would sell at market price if people knew what that price were. Who's going
to buy such a coin at $20 if he sees Krause has it priced for a few dollars. If Krause
has it priced for a few dollars how does he know it's worth $150? Such coins are
simply stifled in this market because the real market is far different.

I believe this is a disservice to the market, to the coins, to US collectors and to Irish
collectors. Perhaps bags of these exist in this country and they'd turn up if everyone
knew the current price. The demand is thin even in the country of issue and all the
market knows is what's available there.

It looks like I'll be getting this book again this year so I'll let everyone know if any
of these prices have been fixed (or is that unfixed).

Krause catalogs are too broad, so it is incomplete and inacurate. If you are collecting pieces from a certain country, try to obtain numismatic publishcations from that country, they are usually reliable, acurate, and they have more information.

I think it begs the question, if not Krause for one volume, then who or what. It seems simply not practical to have a separate catalog for Fiji, Namibia, Nauru, Slovakia, Yemen, etc., and in fact most countries do NOT have separate catalogs. As I have said, I think rather than criticize how about being part of a practical solution; instead of waiting for others, step up to the plate.
