Straight 7?

Bought this on ebay a couple days ago (before today's pop) - I agreed with the sellers assertion (and psa grading guidelines) that the ST qualifier seemed harsh as a 7 grade allows for minor wax staining on the reverse. If not a HOFer, no way this card gets a qualifier in my opinion. What do you think?

after seeing that Maris on here a few weeks ago without the qualifier, yes I would definitely agree with you!

From the scan, you are definitely right. An ST qualifier for that card is a bit harsh.

Ah, you're the reason I didn't win that card. Resub, and nice pickup!!!!!

Silliness. Should be a straight 7.

You could try removing the wax stain with a nylon and re-subbing. Most collectors (myself included) do not feel that this is alteration of a card and therefore legit.

You are not going to be able to remove a wax stain from a non-glossy back of a vintage card. You are basically trying to remove dried wax from a 50 year old piece of paper.

I would crack it and sub to SGC. Would probably grade in the 80+ range and obviously without a qualifier to hurt the value when you sale it.

What do you think the odds of a PSA review resulting in a straight 7 are? Really, if they'd read their own grading standards it should work - no?

1959 Topps are smooth enough on the back where a nylon/fabric softener sheet might work.

If you see it on top of the card chances are it will come off.

I have a 69 WL Mantle with a similar stain.

    Good for you.

The card arrived yesterday -- here's a better scan.

It is even more minor than I thought, but the lower left corner is a little worse than I thought -- so a crackout has some risk...

i would leave it alone. you have a risk in saying that you are worried about the corners that the next grader may downgrade the card to a six if you regrade it.

Looking at the minor wax stain I agree there should be no qualifier, but if you are unsure of the lower left corner I would not crack and resub.

If everyone agrees the ST was not warranted, so will a future purchaser. No need to resub. The stain is staying on there no matter what you do. Good point about a downgrade risk regardless.

This is the kind of card you don't sell on EBAY. Under $400 for that card is a steal.
