That pricey '86 Topps Ryan

I believe the last sold for $800ish, and the one before that was over $1000?

I wonder how this will end

WHATS the pop report on that one now?
    currently collecting baseball of
    2004 spx
    1989 topps psa 10
    1959 phillies
    Phillies of the 70's
  • I had a couple nice looking Ryans from the 86 cello rip we did, dont think any will pull a 10. From the wax rip that followed I pulled a Schmidt and Carlton that I think have a shot at 10 but arent worth nearly as much as those Ryans. Next group sub I think I'll ship them out.

    Card looks short to me.
"My father would womanize, he would drink. He would make outrageous claims like he invented the question mark. Sometimes he would accuse chestnuts of being lazy. The sort of general malaise that only the genius possess and the insane lament. Our childhood was typical. Summers in Rangoon, luge lessons. In the spring we'd make meat helmets. When we were insolent we were placed in a burlap bag and beaten with reeds - pretty standard really."

The last two sold for $888 on May 17th, and $860 on June 7th.

Years from now that card will probably be $50 since there will probably be 10x more PSA 10's. Just over-produced 80's hype with countless unopened material still waiting to be opened.
  • Lots of chipping and a blue smudge?
There's a hole in my head where the rain comes in.
  • That's an ugly 10 at that, makes me want to look at my "not 10" stack of 86's again. The left side is rough cut and the bottom right has a soft corner. I was under the impression if the black stripe had any edge wear, it was a 9. There also seems to be a blue stain on the border. Looks like a 10 from a 1000 card submission.

    agreed,
eventually there will be hundreds of PSA 10's of most modern crap, not that theres anything wrong with that.. but there are thousands upon thousands of unopened boxes of this stuff.

But you will spend over $1000 in wax before you pull a 10-worthy Ryan.
  • Winning bid: US $476.78

I guess others thought it was an ugly 10 as well.

Problem is, it may have just been the scan. The seller is known for having a dirty scanner, and doesn't help himself in this area. He also didn't respond to my request for clarification regarding the blue squiggle on the lower left border of the card. Therefore, I didn't place a bid on it.

Of course there is quite a bit of 86 Topps to rip but the set is very condition senstive for a number of reasons. Check the pop report there are several stars in this set that don't have a 10. Ryan cards demand a premium and I don't see an 1986 10 selling for less than $400 anytime soon.

Check this one out (zero-feedback seller, been on ebay for a week, stole the scan from the previous auction and is now trying to sell it as his/her own) image :

    '86 Ryan

I just reported it to ebay. We'll see if they do anything.

Ebay must be doing their job, it's already gone.

Yeah, those giant sized scans actually make many high grade cards look overgraded. Many sellers seem to be putting up huge scans lately. Is bigger, better?? It doesn't seem to be the case with the jumbo sized card scans. Why do they do it?

Once another 10 PSA 10's get graded, that '86 Ryan will be a $100-150 card at best. Not a card I'd put away with the intent of making some $$ off it someday down the road. Still, if you need to own it, more power to you.

I disagree. Historically $400 is pretty low for that card (Any VCP help). It will hold its own as more people get involved in his registry. 86 Is a very tough year to get a 10 on certain cards.

    I'd say that's a $50 card in 5 years.

  • I'm not sure what scanner can add edge wear and a soft corner to a card, maybe the blue smudge. The odds of "dirt" doing that to the scan at the exact point of the corner and along the edge is almost impossible.

Scan a few of your best looking cards and blow them up-- you'll see exactly what a scanner can add.

This seller does a lot of stupid things (IMO), and making sure that everyone can see every minute imperfection on each PSA 10 he sells is certainly one of them.

This prediction is the horse I'd put my money on.

I have a feeling that those with pockets deep enough to be dropping $500-$1,000 on one regular-issue 1986 Topps baseball card aren't too worried about the potential loss of value, however.
