The most hilarious thing is that Durban probably bought BRK around 137,500 and is now sitting with a 34% loss, vs a loss of 25% in the SP-500 over the same time.

Yeah, I noticed that when I read it this morning too. He didn't cash out of stocks and into something else, just changed stocks. Berkshire had it's worst year ever, right?

I read it daily and thought the insight to be better than the WSJ.

Maybe the constant opening of a 10,000 post thread was a load on the operating system. It's also the case that the commentary over the past week on health care, immigration, etc. may have been too far from mainstream economic news for the monitors. BH may have have historically been a safe place to be....but nothing was safe last year except $USD and $USTB.

Or maybe the thread is going into the shop for its much needed 10,000 mile checkup.

Well, actually, we didn't do too bad with that thread. I know that with our govt.s current leadership there are issues; more than one of my posts was self-edited for commentary or deleted altogether because of my interest in debating current topics but this is just not the place for that. Economics and politics seem to be woven into the same cloth and separating the threads is difficult.

Also, there have been many attempts by posters, mostly one shot wonders, to derail the thread by going political with it but they seemingly drifted off to where ever those people stay. Somehow, the moderators have showed us more than a considerable amount of patience in our discourse but it was just too hard to tow the line for some. These are politically charged times and we are just getting to the front of it.

We still have entitlement wars and class warfare to suffer and it was just a matter of time before things here would go political...couldn't be helped but maybe this is little more than a lesson that regardless of the financial wisdom and keen economic insight and inquisitory querys that this thread and its unique set of posters represented, the site is still owned and moderated by our hosts and we had better stick with the program or things get locked. Actually, locking the thread instead of deleting it altogether was a bit of kindness in itself.

Maybe the thread can be unlocked at some time but it is almost unnecessary to enable it again because if you peruse the topics in the forum that the thread spawned, the thread has more than prospered; it has germinated from a seed into an active forum with a broad range of posters over a number of related topics. It's not all bad. Heck, we even got pictures.

Good job GS, we reached 10K and have our own forum. Live long and prosper.

Did I miss something? I think most of the political discussion was related to inflation risk, and this is certainly relevant to a precious metals thread.

Locking the main thread (for now?) is indeed a small price to pay for the freedom to post on PM's and related economic issues. It's still a huge resource of links and information even if in a difficult format to go back and find anything. Let's not rest on our laurels as we can just as easily lose this entire forum if it gets to be too politicized for CU to take on. This is still a coin forum where the core of any discussion is coins and at best, coins and their bullion related products. It could go the way of the old CU Open "OK Corral" Forum....Aces and Eights.

I think you're onto something about it dragging down the system.
Everytime I opened the thread, the lights would dim.

  • Don't point the finger at me guys. I asked for clarification as I had been asked as to why I locked the thread. For once, I'm innocent!!. It appears that thread went too political with the ongoing discussion of illegal immigration etc. and the powers did not appreciate the path the thread was taking. We can discuss the whys ad infinitum, but it's the way it is. Suck it up and let's start a new one, with a little self-restraint in regard to the politico front.

    Thanks for the clarification.

We did try to do a good job of keeping politics out of it
but it did creep in on more than one occassion. I'm sure
we can do better this time.

  • Amazing how only one political topic was mentioned out of the many broached. Please Don't respond to this statement.
