Any Help With These Two Coins?

Hello. I am new to the world of coin collecting, and stumbled upon this website. I had pictures of two coins that appear to be quite old, and I am unable to identify either of them. I tried to upload the pictures directly here, but they were too large apparently, and I am not sure how to fix that sort of thing. So I put them up for sale on Ebay, but was just wondering if anyone here would be able to check out the link to the sales I am having, and would be able to give me any information as to what they are? This was the only way I could figure out how to make these pictures available to be seen on this site. I really would appreciate any information anyone could give? Thanks in advance! I will give the links with the pictures below.

  • Thank you very much for that, Ormandh. My computer knowledge is about on par with my knowledge of coins!

The second is a Crusader coin from Tripoli. Text
  • >> This auction features a VERY OLD, RARE Coin. I am not sure exactly what this coin is

In that case you should end the auction...

  • Thank you very much for the info, BS!!
  • Coinnuttius, I understand what you are saying. But I couldn't upload the pictures onto this website to ask my questions because they were too big, so I just figured I would create an Ebay auction so that people here could at least see the pictures.

    You missed his point.

The first coin looks to be a copy of a silver real of Spanish Dominican Republic ~1504. If my memory isn't completely gone, there was another of these posted earlier this year.

    edited to add

    copy = fake
  • Hi Coinnerd, thanks for the info. If you have another moment, would you be able to tell me how you are able to determine if the coin is a copy or authentic?
  • Unfortunately both coins-- purporting to be 1474-1504 spanish reale of ferdinand and isabella, and a Crusader Era coin of Tripoli, appear to be cast replicas made during the modern era (probably early to mid 1900s). Cast replicas can have an "aged" look to them because of their rough-ish somewhat faded surface. But tell-tale signs are the somewhat bubbly surfaces, the fact that they are too nicely round to be medieval coins, and also, a genuine Spanish reale of 1474-1504 would be silver. Actually both coins would be made of good silver. Both are popular type late medieval coins, so copies have been made of them.

The big givaways on this are, the design elements are not correct and the coin should be silver not copper or brass as it appears to be.
  • Just wanted to say thanks to everyone who took the time to help me figure out what these coins were. It was much appreciated.

I see you still have the auctions running, even though you've now been told the coins are fake?

Also (and this is not just directed at you but at many eBay sellers in general):

How is that you can claim a coin is "RARE" or "SCARCE" when you don't even know what it is!?! image

That annoys the hell out of me, and lots of collectors and numismatists. It's just fine to say you don't know what it is. But claiming it to be something it isn't, well... that's a form of fraud. (Even though it happens all the time and gets overlooked because it's so commonly done). I suggest you take the "RARE" and "SCARCE" out of your titles and add mention that the coins are copies, or that you were told they were copies, even if you don't believe what you've heard.

Were you just spamming up the forum with your stuff for sale, or did you honestly want to know what you had? It's hard to tell. Maybe you really are a novice, like you said. I am willing to give you the benefit of the doubt. I'm not trying to bash you, really.

If your "thanks for information post" was sincere, then hey, stick around, and welcome. There is a lot of good information and good people here. image

I have to agree with Lord M. If you don't know what it is, you have no way of knowing if it is old or rare or scarce or anything else. That is to say, you are deceiving potential bidders. I am glad to see that the auctions are cancelled but all the same, please be honest in your auction descriptions. Just say what it is, not what it might be or appears to be or what you hope it to be. These are important points that we around here take seriously. I hope you will too.

  • I already explained this, but the auctions ARE NOT still active, and were not active soon after I created them. I simply created Ebay auction pages to show the pictures on this site, as I was unable to upload pictures here. I had no intention of selling them without knowing what they were. It wouldn't be smart on my part either, because I could misrepresent a really expensive coin out of pure ignorance that someone could just snatch up for pennies due to my lack of information.

I just created a title for the listing, because I cannot create the page without one. I understand your point about using "rare" and "scarce" in the title, but I was just trying to put words in there that might attract someone quickly to the auction that could give me some info before I ended them. I also left the auction up for a day or so just to see if anyone on Ebay would contact me with information about the coins, as that has happened in the past with other items as well.

I can assure you I was not "trolling" to sell the coins at this moment through this website. At this point, I am not even sure what to do with them, if the information I received here is correct. Anyway, thanks again for all the help, and I do have a bag of other coins that I am unable to identify (they appear asian or middle eastern, which are hard for me to identify due to the lack of any English words to use as a starting point.) I assume there may be a category on these boards for those kinds of coins too.

    Have a nice weekend!

I believe you, and I see now the auctions are not active. Sorry if I flew off the handle on you.

OK, Tester. It's cool. It's just that, whether you intended to or not, you pressed some buttons. But, really, you are welcome here, even if it didn't look like it at first. And yes, we do like pictures. When I post them here I use photobucket. It's easy enough that even people like me can use it!

    Don't be a stranger.
  • Thanks everyone. The other coins I have are definitely real (most appear to be asian or middle eastern, which means no english words and not even dates that I can recognize) and most likely from the 20th Century, but completely unidentifiable by me. This whole collection of coins was handed over to me to try to sell on the behalf of a deceased relative's estate about a year ago, and I got through everything that I was able to identify with the help of a WORLD COINS book and other online research. But now I have this damn bag of coins that I am unable to even figure out enough about to even start researching them. That is why I was happy to stumble upon this site in my searches, but then I had the problem with the pictures. I will check out the photobucket thing, but I am also a complete computer ignoramus. I am pretty much the "perfect storm" of ignorance with this whole process.

Feel free to post your unknowns here and I am sure that we would be glad to help you with identification. It would be safe to say that there is an answer to most questions you may have for just about any coin you may be able to post to these forums. We have a fine group of collectors' in every area of numismatics(study of coins) that could answer your questions or at least give you an educated guess to what you actually have. You also may be able to sell them here and circumvent the ebay fees and not get burned. We will surely give you our fair opinion.image-Dan
