I have tried it twice and both times it was a no go.

Yes I had a GAI 9.5 71 topps Carl Yaztremski that wouldn't crossover to a psa 10 or 9. I also had a GAI 10 64 topps Phil Niekro that wouldn't cross to a psa 10 or 9. What kind of stuff do you want to crossover?

I have had GAI 7 1957 football cross over to PSA 7.5 and 7. I had Topps 52 baseball GAI 5 cross to PSA 6 and 5.5. I popped all the cards out and sent in raw. I have had all 6 cards from GAI cross at same or higher. Maybe I am just lucky.

So is it better to pop the card out and send it in raw?

FAILURE.. was going to cross over 2 1969 basketball cards.. a wilt and kareem...SGC advised me that i would not be happy with crossover.. seems like they were graded at least 1 1/2 grades off from what gai graded them at...... just my experience
always looking for 1969 graded basketball

I cracked out about 5 1969 topps baseball cards graded by GAI, and submitted to PSA- I got equivalent or better grades on all of them (PSA 8 and 9). The GAI cards were graded by Steve Baker- I do not know if that makes a difference. I got the same results with BVG cards.

I've never used the crossover service, but have cracked out GAI (old flip) and had them come back with the same grade from PSA

Submitted GAI card in the case, and did NOT meet minimum grade (wanted the exact same grade....GAI 8)...I hear people have better luck cracking them out, and dismal luck leaving in the case.....

In general, I have had far, far better luck with crackouts of any card, psa, sgc, bvg as well, than crossover or review. Of course there are all kinds of risks involved (card damage, lower grade, min size, evid trim, etc.)

I once hit a psa 10 on a bgs 8.5 crackout of an A-Rod TR-1 Trade Card rookie... go figure.

Zero for 3 on GAI crackouts.

All GAI 8.5s that came back as PSA 8s ... which is what they probably were to begin with. image

Your results may vary ... but probably not by much ...

  • On a somewhat related note, a local collector is selling a 1984 Star Jordan #195 GAI 7 for $175. Is that a reasonable price? The card (#195) isn't listed in SMR, but the Beckett value is $350.

    Pretty fair on the Jordan.

To get a good idea of a GAI grade.....take the GAI grade..and knock it down 2 grades....ie, a GAI 6 becomes a PSA 4. That gives you a VERY rough estimate about what the card is worth.......GAI cards are pure junk now.
  • Thanks for the information. I thought that GAI had a pretty good reputation. Why have their cards gone down in value?

They ruined it a few years ago by shutting down their website and moving (actually evicted) from their location in Southern California, without telling anyone or posting a message. People who had thousands of dollars of cards/packs subbed were stressing. Today, the problem is with their pack grading, they've been grading tampered packs.

Their initial value was based on the expectation that you would be able to pop or cross a GAI card over to the same grade with PSA or SGC. The drop in value reflects the ability to do so.

I did manage a PSA 10 out of a newer GAI 9 on a modern card last year. I cracked it out though.

I thought the initial value was in all the .5 bumps certain dealers/people got?
