Is this a legit 10 ounce silver bar?

BarndogBarndog Posts: 20,490 ✭✭✭✭✭
a friend sent me this pic asking if the bars he is considering buying are legit. They are as generic as they come, just saying 10 oz .999 fine pure silver with a large S in the corner.

Pics suck, but that's all he could send

  • I would be VERY suspect of the bar...

1] It is stamped "10 oz.' ....... buit not 10 oz. TROY.

2] Stamped ".999 fine" ..... but not SILVER. Some could argue the "S" is for silver...well....

3] Stamped "FULL WEIGHT" ...... I have not seen this a a legit bar before.

I am NOT saying that this is NOT a silver bar...... Butttt...

Unless you really know your silver or have experience with this exact make of bar ......

    I would pass.....

It does say 10 oz .999 fine silver. I've seen them before, Never owned one however. I'm sure its fine. Its best to stick with well known names as you may have a hard time selling in future.

your most likely ok. I've seen lots of old pour silver bars that look like that. Unless the back says Made in China, your ok.

Looks like a 1980 garage refinery job. Probably very close in weight and fineness, but its hard to sell them because the assay quality is unknow.

It s the kind of thing we would buy at a discount and put out in the case for a while to sell to a collector, and throw in our next silver assay lot if it didn't sell by then.

sometimes old pour bars like these sell for a lot more on ebay as collectors collect them. I've seen some sell for 30-40+ an oz!!

  • Looks like a late 60's "refined" coin bar from a backyard smelter. It's .9 something, but .999? Good luck.

ten points back of spot. (On a good day)
