From the Lansing State Journal:
People gathered on a bridge overlooking the scene at Tiger Stadium today, some wearing their Tigers shirts, to capture the historic structure's last moments as the remains of the stadium fell.
"I think it’s a sad day, I think it's a lost opportunity, " said Thom Linn, president of the Old Tiger Stadium Conservancy.
A Wayne County Circuit Court judge today lifted a temporary injunction blocking the demolition of the stadium.
Debris fell as water misters sprayed the area to keep the rising dust down. The sound of heavy machines and falling materials filled the air as onlookers watched, mostly silent, in shock.
Two machines worked on the area, one tore through the stadium structure, the other picked up the falling debris and moved it to the side.
Judge Prentiss Edwards lifted the injunction after the Old Tiger Conservancy failed to demonstrate at a hearing this morning that it had the financial wherewithal to receive another extension.
Attorney Frederick Berry, representing the Detroit Economic Development Corp., said the agency has given the nonprofit group “extension after extension” to try to meet financial deadlines for raising necessary money toward the total proposed $27 million commercial redevelopment of the remaining dugout-to-dugout section of the stadium at Michigan and Trumbull.
The conservancy’s last deadline was March 15 and the organization has “no resources to carry out” its plans, Berry said.
Judge Edwards declined a request from the conservancy to continue the injunction against demolition for 48 hours while it appeals the decision, which means that demolition could begin, weather permitting.

<< <i>I probably should know this but they are also going to tear down old Yankee Stadium....is that correct? >>
They should be tearing down the New Yankee Stadium. That place is a joke. The place makes Coors field look like the old Polo Grounds.

<< <i>But doesn't the New Yankee Stadium look more like the original? >>
Yeah......it's a beautiful ballpark, don't get me wrong. However, a homerun to left or right field there would be a warning track ball anywhere else. The Yanks beat the Rays on the Homerun ball alone last night, and 2 out of the 3 probably would've been outs in other ballparks. They showed the graphic on sportscenter, and through the same number of games as last year, there have been nearly twice as many homeruns to left and rightfield as there were this time last year.
