Anyone ever catch a PSA OOPS?

And I don't mean grading. I just got back my April specials and my '67 Jim Bunning #560 has the encapsulated label of a Smoky Burgess #506. I don't guess that makes it an error card. I bet they fix it, though.

All the time. I have 4 cards that I need to send back because the flip is wrong.

My rate of "mechanical errors" runs about 5%

Better question...who here hasn't caught a PSA oops?

That's just the name of the game when you've got to rely on a third party grader, it happens to all of the big 3.

    Good day,
I am afraid I've caught plenty, I had to send a whole order back one time of 100 cards that were all in the wrong number Holders, all the right set, just every card in the wrong number for the set. Great Verification step.

Here is one right here. The only one I ever found with hundreds graded. It is labeled as an N172 Old Judge card but it is really an Allen and Ginters card. I wish it was an Old Judge card because it would be worth a whole lot more...........

That's not an Allen & Ginter either. It's an N162 Goodwin Champions.

    you mean like this...

    image

well they do this all the time with my subs...or i get 1994 instead of 1996. i get about 10% or higher errors on my player set subs. this example is obvious that the labels got flipped when the slabbed them. but then again they have no QC obviously. but i have had a Favre auto card slabbed as a Rothlisberger Auto'd card and one wasnt even in that sub. had a marino 97 inscriptions auto come back as elway...yet the elway right next to it was slabbed correct!!! yes they will fix it. some times they give you a voucher for the pain and suffering you have to go through. but here is my biggest problem. they say they have a cert department that does the research, yet they still fail over 10% of the time with my cards, sometimes more than once. they really need people there that know what they are doing....but then again that same person might be more of a security risk as they would know the value of the cards.

the other thing that gets me is i send in cards (yes mainly on specials) and tend to have to wait two months after being logged in for the cards to be done. now sometimes they log in fast other times they dont. so in general it takes me 3 months from when i drop them off at the PO for them to come back to my PO. alas only to find errors...have to be sent back again to psa (most times i wait until i have a decent number) or wait for a chicago show, then sent back to me again. then i can finally request them to be added to a player set....which then takes 4-6 months for the card to be added. most of the time it requires the set registry people to communicate with PSA cert people (as the registry people have nearly zero card knowledge) so we are back to dealing with the people that have on average a 10% error rate. which generally means i have to scan the front and backs of some of the cards so that they can be added. by then its nearly 1 year since i mailed the card the first time to PSA.

ok i feel better now. but this happens way to much in my book.

Yeah, I figured that's what you meant... I can't imagine someone having one of those and not knowing what the hell it is. image

This is why I always check for my grades online. That way if I catch an error I can have them fix it before the order ships out. They originally encapsulated my PSA 9 Schmidt RC with a label for one of the other Rookie Star cards. I caught it and they were able to reslab it before shipping. That saved me the hassle of having to ship the card back to them, insured, on my dime.

I have had only one mechanical error in thousands of cards. I do have a 64 Blanchard that is labeled 8oc. The card well centered front and back, but it's not worth sending in for review.
  • I have a question

If PSA does slab cards with name mechanical error's is it possible that they can also make a mechanical error on the grade as well and slab it?

Very common, Ive literally seen hundreds over the years.

Most are stupid mistakes that any good quality control would catch...... ie. misidentified sets, but some are even worse like grading a card that had 1/4th of it cut off (see N300 below).

Newbies, Make sure to only buy graded T206 Wagner's, Plank's, and Magie's image

    image
T206 Honus Wagner.... so this is a $750,000 card???,....... NO, this is a $35 card (Heinie Wagner)

    image
T206 Eddie Plank.... so this is a $35,000 card???,....... NO, its a E95 and worth about $34,500 less

    image
T206 Sherry Magie error card..... so this is a $50,000 card???,....... NO, its about a $100 card and is not THE error card

N300 cards have an ad for Mayo Tobacco on the bottom, this card is missing the bottom.

MINT 9 1999 SPORTS ILLUSTRATED AUTOGRAPH COLLECTION OTTIS ANDERSON AUTOGRAPH COLLECTION

The card I sent was otto graham.

They slab so many cards that mistakes are inevitable. I wish they gave you time to look over your sub before they ship, but then I'd be unhappy with the shipping delay.

While I have little patience or tolerance for typos or "mechanical errors", a misnomer if I ever heard one, when you can't even properly identify the item in the holder, people should lose their jobs.

Yeah well when you do millions of tasks you are sure to make a mistake or two, or ten.

I wish they (PSA) could be correct all the time like many here are at their job are.

    Good for you.

    steve,

i dont think we expect perfection....but when in my case many are do to lack of knowledge by the cert department and they have the cards for 2 months to figure it out...not to mention that i have filled out the form with the correct info to start with...i think they leave plenty of room for improvement. its also pretty clear that no one does any qc at all after the cards have been slabbed.

my boss has a test when i show him results from experiments...will hilda the cleaning lady be able to notice the difference. well i think hilda would have noticed something wrong with the two that i posted above.

I have several mechanical errors in at PSA right now, ranging from listing the wrong variation on an '81 Fleer (no value difference, just annoying when you want it in a registry set) to a Topps Venezuelan where I don't think the original submitter realized it wasn't a regular Topps (if he had, he would have gotten it fixed before selling it), so I can't put much blame on PSA for that.
